Will Steacy
Left -''Allen''Madison Firefighter IAFF Local, Madison 2011 Right- Mina's Furniture , Gary 2011

See you tonight! Don't miss it!

Michael Mazzeo Gallery is pleased to announce a special presentation of recent photographs by the American photographer, journalist, and social documentarian, Will Steacy. The 50, 8x10 inch color prints will be on view for 48 hours only from April 28 to April 30 and will be accompanied by an installation of artifacts and ephemera relating to the project. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, April 28, from 6-8 PM and a gallery talk by the artist on Saturday, April 30 at 3 PM.

Deeply moved by headlines decrying the perils facing the nation, Steacy, a former union laborer, packed his view camera and drove to Madison, Wisconsin to witness the heated confrontation between union workers and Governor Scott Walker. He spent 24 hours that night and the following day photographing events as they unfolded inside and around the capitol building, as the Governor prepared to sign the notorious bill restricting collective bargaining rights for union workers.

Shortly afterward, Steacy drove to Gary, Indiana, home to the first US Steel plant, and a city whose rise and fall has become a symbol of the plight of the American workforce. He photographed up and down Broadway, Gary's main artery, documenting city institutions and local businesses, revealing the grim challenges that now face this once-vibrant city.

Photographed in 48 hours, Steacy's understated, quietly seductive images reveal an undercurrent of catastrophic anxiety enveloping the American psyche while pointedly exposing the harsh realities of a nation torn apart by misguided government policies and corporate greed. An outspoken critic of inequality and injustice, Will Steacy's images, insightful, confrontational, and elegant, offer hope and renewal to a nation divided.

The photographic series, Havana 2010 by Michael Eastman currently on display at Barry Friedman LTD, are the  dream of architecture and interior fine art photography collectors and the envy and emulation of the ones who aspire of this caliber of work. Monumental in size, rich color palette and saturation, you get the feeling of being transported to the grandness and the decay of beauty in Cuba. If you had never traveled to Cuba, you must see this show to realize that  there was grandness and greatness in the Caribbean way even before America was ever on the map or even had its name.

Special thanks to John A. Bennette for taking me along to see it.
On display till April 30, 2011.

I finally got to see this show and highly recommend you to go and see it! The portraiture and other photography works of Mark Morrisroe, whose tumultuous, intense and brief  life was cut short by the AIDS epidemic left a very strong mark for others to emulate and follow.

Coincidentally, there is another exhibit of Mark Morrisroe works at The Artist Space running till May 1, 2011. http://www.artistsspace.org/present-exhbitions

From the series Gastro Glam
11'' x 14'' Metallic Digital C-Print
Edition of 7
$350.00

(all prices include tax and shipping & handling)

Each print comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

About:

Justin Walker studied art and graphic design and the University of Colorado before moving to Brooklyn, NY in 2005 to pursue photography.  Largely self-taught, he now is a free-lance commercial and fine art photographer focusing on travel and food.  His work has been shown from Colorado to New York and most recently in 2011, Gastro-Glam, a graphic and colorful departure to his other work, was exhibited in "The Pleasure Is All Mine", group exhibition for Finch & Ada.  Although vastly different, both showcase Walker’s control of composition and color.

Artist Statement:
Gastro Glam is like that of a graphic illustration of modern aphrodisiactic pleasure.  Anatomical diagrams of form and color made with the idea of pursuing pleasure through food. Inspired by the consumption of foods for more than just calories "Gastro-Glam" is a study of food as an object within the ideas of modern beauty, refinement, sexual stimulation, health, and in-turn happiness and life.

Felandus Thames

I had been meaning to tell you all about this show, The Black Portrait  currently on display @ Rush Arts Gallery in Chelsea, NYC till 5/21/11, that you must go and see. Natasha Logan and photographer and friend Hank Willis Thomas did an splendid job co-curating this show. it is very strong in content , theme and great imagery. You can easily move this show to the Studio Museum of Harlem or any museum for that matter. The work of Felandus Thames (shown above) was one of my very favorite gems to be discovered as part of this interesting take of black portraiture. I highly recommended.

In the Spring of 2010, I began a new project photographing cinemas in India.  Although, I had not intended to pursue this project, upon arrival, I realized how quickly India is being altered by the intense economic growth and the loss of these small, single screen cinemas represents... More
