Chris Venere - FAMILY @ Postmasters Gallery 9/10/10

This is one of the Fall Solo Shows that you should not miss!
See you there~!

Postmasters Gallery is very pleased to announce that we now represent CHRIS VERENE.
An exhibition of his photographs will inaugurate a new season at Postmasters in September.

CHRIS VERENE
FAMILY

September 10 – October 16, 2010
opening reception September 10, 2010   6-8pm

Chris Verene’s first show at Postmasters will present over forty photographs made during the past twenty-six years.  This landmark exhibition of documentary storytelling chronicles a group of closely-knit characters from the photographer’s family and their rural Illinois community. The photographer is also one of the characters-- his blood bonds and bonds of friendship within the small town are carefully spelled out in simple handwritten captions atop the colorful pictures.  Verene's new book, “Family,” published this summer, contains many of the images on view - it opens with his cousin Candi's divorce. Candi was made famous when her wedding picture appeared on the cover of Verene's first book ten years ago.  Both husband and wife were fired in the Maytag factory closing described in President Obama’s first address to the United States in 2004 and in the 2010 State of the Union. Theirs is not the only family torn apart by the economic struggles of the country, as Verene documents other similar stories.  The exhibition will also bring to light recent developments in the artist’s intimate life, as his young child, Nico, Brooklyn-born and half-Puerto Rican, appears throughout the latest photographs, playing with his cousins and newfound friends in Galesburg.  This show will offer an extraordinary, inspiring, hopeful, and sometimes sorrow-filled view into the true personal stories and private lives of the artist’s immediate and extended family in their small community as photographed throughout a lifetime in economically depressed Galesburg, Illinois.  Museums currently showing Verene’s work include The Tate Modern, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The New Orleans Museum of Art.

Hurricane Katrina 5 year Anniversary- Richard Misrach + Dave Anderson= Aperture Foundation

Photo by Richard Misrach courtesy of Aperture Foundation

It has been 5 long years since Hurricane Katrina left a path of destruction to several southern states and areas. There has been some progress but still, a lot of work needs to be done. Photographer Richard Misrach spent some time down in New Orleans during 2005 and captured the mood, desolation, destruction and visuals by photographing several structures, objects and facades in which mostly text was written on.

The text written on the structures surfaces truly tell  the story. I saw the book and must tell you that is phenomenal and it is a must have, not only for its content but also because, the artist royalties are being donated to the Make it Right Foundation, which is currently rebuilding the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. By buying this great book you will be contributing to rebuild a part of America that 5 years later still needs help. Kudos to Aperture Foundation for publishing such a heartfelt book and Richard Misrach for telling the story with such strong images.

There is also another book by Dave Anderson  titled One Block : A New Orleans Neighborhood Rebuilds(see more info below) that also, focuses in a particular block in New Orleans. Dave Anderson just had his solo show about this series at Clampart Gallery : http://www.clampart.com/artists/anderson/andersonob1.htm

Here is some info from Exposures, Aperture Foundation blog:

One Block: A New Orleans Neighborhood Rebuilds by Dave Anderson and Destroy This Memoryby Richard Misrach, both new books from Aperture, document and reflect on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans’ road to recovery. On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of Katrina, these projects provide valuable and powerful portraits of the storm’s impact. Recent profiles on the New York Times Lens BlogNola.comNPR provide insight into these bodies of work and now a number of upcoming events in New Orleans will bring the photographers and the work itself to New Orleans. Dan Cooney Fine Art Late Summer Emerging Art Action @ i-Gavel

I am very happy and proud to be part of Dan Cooney Fine Art Late Summer Emerging Art Auction. This photograph in particular is very special to me and dedicated to my friend  Igor Jong . This photograph is part of my new ongoing photography series Nightclubbing and it is the very first  photograph released from it.

Item No. 1909074 :      Ruben Natal- San Miguel, Igor - Up In The Clouds, NYC (Nightclubbing Series), 2009 D2CF

Description
C print, signed and numbered "AP" in ink on the reverse.
Estimate
500 - 1000
Provenance
Directly from the artist.
Measurements
11 x 14"
Condition
Artwork is in excellent condition.

The beginning of this on going series was the Spring/Summer of 2009. With the current Economic Recession, there is a new resurgence in the nightclub scene in Manhattan, NYC. For a short while, the job loss, the closing of businesses, corporations and the Internet addiction has forced people to relocate, leave the city or stay home.

All of the sudden, small club and at times obscure venues starting to open and with it a new wave of creative, in full costume galore crowd reminiscent of the 1980’s and 1990’s era. The new ‘’Lady Gaga generation’’ is out and proud.

This photo in particular is dedicated to my friend and club buddy, Igor Jong. We lost Igor this summer. His sudden and early death still haunts me…

Artistic & Professional Development Workshops
Portfolio Review Sessions - September 25, 2010

    Brian Shumway-'' Black Girl'' Series

Someone a while back brought to my attention the work of Brian Shumway. I checked it out and now so do you!

I love, love his Black Girl Series. There is a strong social message behind the portraits... more than meets the eye. I find them  rather ''in your face'',  sincere and very of the moment. There is melancholy, hunger, desire, lust, ambition, humor and great urge of dreams to be fulfilled. Most of this dreams will never materialized due to the pretty evident  racial discrimination of the Modeling/Fashion industry towards people of color. Looking at the series in detail it may make you feel sad because, there is a true reality behind all the pretty '' Black Girls''

    Here is his artist statement:

All Photos by Brian Shumway- From the Black Girl Series

    Artist Statement

Titled after a Lenny Kravitz song extolling the unique beauty of black women, Black Girl is a portrait series about aspiring models. Having a documentary background, I began photographing models to challenge myself professionally. However, my notions about modeling and the kinds of women who pursue it were challenged as I gradually recognized a central paradox: so many black women choosing to pursue modeling despite the industry’s persistent preference for white models. On one modeling website alone, there are over 3000 aspiring black models within the New York City area. Only white women surpass that. After organizing shoots, I realized this was an opportunity to explore a large, yet isolated corner of the modeling world.

Part anthropology and part make-believe, Black Girl is subtle and multifaceted. Because this project was collaborative (the models and I would discuss wardrobe, make-up, pose, concept, location, etc), the results demonstrate one way in which they choose to be seen. The act of modeling allows them to enter an alternate reality and assume an alter ego. Conversely, it opens a space to unveil a dormant side of themselves and grapple with issues about the body, identity, beauty, sexuality, youth, and fantasy. How they express themselves not only says something about who they are individually, but reveals clues about the broader socioeconomic class and cultural milieu to which they belong.

Black Girl is a small sampling of black women with a passion for modeling. It attempts to capture how they see themselves in the role of model and is not meant to represent all aspiring black models nor black women generally. Far from being cookie-cutter fashion or runway models, they deviate from the industry’s stringent definition of beauty. At core, Black Girl is a story of bitter irony, of beautiful women who dream of a profession where they are systematically devalued. Yet, they prove that an undeniable drive to attain a dream cannot be diminished.

You can see more of the series and Brian's work here:
