Currently on exhibition at hous projects is The Naked Truth, curated by Ruben Natal-San Miguel. The show presents us with a reflection of the progression of sex and sexuality within the past half century. Flowing through the conceptions around sex, then to the act of it and back again to the desires behind sex, Ruben uses a collection of works by 28 artists to convey to the public what sex was, is, and may be becoming,
The show opens with two works by Bert Stern of Marylyn Monroe. In these images she is playing and seeming unaware of her nudity. What we are being given is the ideal of romance and sexuality in an angelic manner. The works then progresses into the ‘70s and ‘80s with images that allude to the lust for sex and the desire of the body.
Succeeding to the ‘90s, with images by Susan Meiselas and Juliana Beasley, we are introduced to the pursuit of sex through monetary uses. Beasley image depicts her at a time when she was a professional stripper named “Nico”; Meiselas work illustrates a man sitting, waiting at an “adult” lounge.
And with that we enter the new era in sex, which embraces fetishism and voyeurism, the pursuit of sex, and sex as a freedom. We see this in Will Steacy’s work of a movie theatre advertising XXX films; Marla Rutherford’s fetish girls in costume; Phil Toledano’s image entitled “Emma” where we are shown a woman works as a phone sex operator and loves her work.
On the other side of this we see sex as a different type of freedom. There are photographs by Chad States and Naomi Harris whose works display sexual acts being carried out in public settings.
Finally the show leads us what sex is becoming. In Jen Davis’ works she gives us with three diptychs of herself web chatting with a man and we are seeing technology, specifically the internet, as a key player in fulfilling one’s sexual fantasies.
The exhibition’s curatorial process develops the notions of sexual desire in an array of concepts without forcing anything on the viewer.
When it comes right down to it, sex can be the most abstract thing. No one shares the same desires.

ON AND OFF THE WALLS: ERIC OGDEN’S VISIONS

It is not at all surprising that Eric Ogden had directed several short movies before he turned to still photography. Each picture in his exhibit at Hous Projects Gallery looks like a beautiful frame from an undated film noir. Time seems frozen, the action suspended, the narrative of the picture arrested. Each picture makes me wonder about what has gone on before and where it will be heading. This sense of mystery is what makes Ogden’s images so seductive.

Whether it is a child on a swing in midair, a husky looming in a hallway, or a beautiful blonde hovering at a gas station, someone is trying to tell a story. Ogden provides the scenario and then lets his subjects either act out their story or directs them to do so. He works with light and shadows, his color is saturated, and the surroundings are lush.

I would have guessed that Ogden had grown up in the South, yet he is from Flint, Michigan. Perhaps the explanation for his Southern bent is his admiration for the legendary Mississippi photographer William Eggleston. When I asked Ogden whether he is familiar with Gregory Crewdson’s photographs, he told me he knows his work, as people often had mentioned it to him. He feels more akin to Philip-Lorca diCorsia, he said, and his real inspiration is Eggleston. But while Eggleston finds his pictures in his own environment, Ogden blends fact and fiction and creates cinematic dreamscapes.

A reception to celebrate the artist will be held at the gallery from 6 to 10 pm, Thursday, March 18, 2010. The exhibition will be traveling to the Los Angeles location in the summer of 2010 and dates are to be announced.

Eric Ogden chases mythical visions of his childhood in his photography by recreating situations infused with the unruly emotions he associated with the mysteries of everyday objects, such as toys, vacant lots and overgrown houses. Growing up in a working class Flint, Michigan neighborhood, he was ever curious and intrigued not only by his surroundings, but also by the people he encountered. Individuals moved through his young life that he found both terrible and wondrous, like those in the old horror films he indulged in watching. It was the power of suggestion that motivated him. All of those things that as a child you find surreal and are neither able to define, process nor digest, were burned into Ogden’s mind and are translated through his work. As one crosses the threshold to adulthood, these things and places that permeated one's youth become suffused with nostalgia. Fact increasingly blends with fiction, memories and mysteries turn in on themselves and you question: is the truth what events you can recall? Or is the truth feelings you have about something even if it never happened?

Like his surroundings, the people in his life were crucially influential on Ogden’s photography. His grandfather was a poet and fed his imagination through a mutual correspondence that unraveled his visual ideas into literary terms. These urges and sensibilities also heightened his work in film before he moved into photography and are very apparent in his cinematic compositions.

Ogden describes his photographs as “populated with characters that seem haunted by the weight of the past, images that evoke the strangeness of the everyday, and the mystery of objects and landscapes that seem to hold their secrets and allude to stories never quite explained.”

Characters move amid compositions veiled in darkness with glowing highlights of warmth that infuse the
sense of place. Reality blends with fiction and gives the impression you could step right into the frame and watch the story unfold.Moreover, the emotional quality in the play of light and shadow is as much about what you are shown as what you are not. Visions of Graham Greene’s The Destuctors are conjured as you move through the images and meet characters both eerie and innocent.These sentiments thread through Ogden’s photography as glimpses not only into his character’s lives, but also his personal intrigue for psychology and perception.

Eric Ogden lives and works in New York City. His photographic work has been featured in solo exhibitions with Saatchi & Saatchi as well as hous projects and group exhibitions at Stephen Weiss Studio, Edison Place Gallery, Wexler Gallery, Alan Koppel Gallery, Regional Arts Commission,Chronicle Books, ACE Gallery, and Holden Luntz Gallery. Critical attention has been paid to Ogden’s work by Photo District News, American Photo, The Flint Journal and in American Character: A Photographic Journey published by Chronicle Books. Ogden’s assignment images have also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Esquire, The New Yorker, W, Rolling Stone, and Interview among others.
