The Naked Truth- Review

Currently on exhibition at hous projects is The Naked Truth, curated by Ruben Natal-San Miguel. The show presents us with a reflection of the progression of sex and sexuality within the past half century. Flowing through the conceptions around sex, then to the act of it and back again to the desires behind sex, Ruben uses a collection of works by 28 artists to convey to the public what sex was, is, and may be becoming,
The show opens with two works by Bert Stern of Marylyn Monroe. In these images she is playing and seeming unaware of her nudity. What we are being given is the ideal of romance and sexuality in an angelic manner. The works then progresses into the ‘70s and ‘80s with images that allude to the lust for sex and the desire of the body.
Succeeding to the ‘90s, with images by Susan Meiselas and Juliana Beasley, we are introduced to the pursuit of sex through monetary uses. Beasley image depicts her at a time when she was a professional stripper named “Nico”; Meiselas work illustrates a man sitting, waiting at an “adult” lounge.
And with that we enter the new era in sex, which embraces fetishism and voyeurism, the pursuit of sex, and sex as a freedom. We see this in Will Steacy’s work of a movie theatre advertising XXX films; Marla Rutherford’s fetish girls in costume; Phil Toledano’s image entitled “Emma” where we are shown a woman works as a phone sex operator and loves her work.
On the other side of this we see sex as a different type of freedom. There are photographs by Chad States and Naomi Harris whose works display sexual acts being carried out in public settings.
Finally the show leads us what sex is becoming. In Jen Davis’ works she gives us with three diptychs of herself web chatting with a man and we are seeing technology, specifically the internet, as a key player in fulfilling one’s sexual fantasies.
The exhibition’s curatorial process develops the notions of sexual desire in an array of concepts without forcing anything on the viewer.
When it comes right down to it, sex can be the most abstract thing. No one shares the same desires.

ABOUT
As any artist or photographer can tell you, independently funding a full body of work and preparing the work for exhibition involves constant financial struggle. Receiving a grant to make Removing Mountains in 2007 was amazing, but if I kept waiting for another large sum of money to be awarded, I might never make another project. In 2009, I launched a print sale to hit the road for part one of a two-part trip to Southeast Ohio. The result of that trip is the edit of Plume that is currently on my website. I was able to fund the trip entirely through your generosity.
Plume is almost done. After one more trip to the region this summer, I will be able to make a complete edit and begin showing the work. Later this year I will have my first full exhibition of the work at the Appalachian Center in Kentucky. I’m launching a second print sale effort to fund the return travels to the region this summer and prepare for the Kentucky show and future exhibitions.

Additionally, politically, at the center of this work is the issue of energy as it relates to our ability to distribute power in every form. 2010 is a year where I/we can feel one step closer to this conversation entering the public arena in a substantial way.

About the Project
Down These Mean Streets provides us with photographic evidence of America's abandonment of it's inner cities. Prompted by the pervasive fear gripping the country and our preoccupation with homeland security, America has diverted its attention and resources away from those most in need, divesting itself of the basic responsibilities of affordable housing, medical care and essential infrastructure.
Working only at night, Steacy walks alone from the airport to the central business district of each city he explores. With map in hand, he follows a loosely planned route through the barren streets and neighborhoods routinely avoided by all but local inhabitants, while stopping to document his observations and chance encounters on film. Illuminated by the saturated, artificial colors of the urban night and marked by long, patient exposures with his large-format view camera, Steacy's images seductively draw us into a country of foreclosed homes and vacant lots, broken economies and neglected people. With a combination of carefully composed urban views, subtly precise detail images, and insightful portraits, he allows us the time and space to enter this world and question our role in it.
This project marks a continuation of Steacy's extended paean to the American working class. He has received numerous awards and praise for his work including the prestious Tierney Fellowship and The Aperture Foundation New York City Green Cart Photography Commission. Steacy was named as a 25 Under 25: Up-and-Coming American Photographers by powerHouse Books and The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. His photographs have been featured in The New Yorker, Harper's, New York Magazine, Newsweek, The Paris Review and on HBO and CNN.

Friedlander’s work is primarily about deception. She first photographs landscapes in a blurred manner to give them a painterly quality. Next Friedlander applies the photograph to a canvas and paints the rest of the image in what she remembers it to be. Having meticulous detail to color and the blending of forms, the two mediums blend as one; misleading the viewer as to what medium the work actually is.

Currently on view at the Yossi Milo Gallery is Périphéries; a series by photographer Mohamed Bourouissa. The ten images from the series portray the racial and social tensions that are affecting the people of France on a daily basis. Bourouissa is staging the events based on common situational re occurrences. By methodically planning the location and lighting, while allowing the subjects freedom in their movements and expressions, the artist is beautifully blending actuality with the impression of reality.
The images depict tense scenes of a contemporary life: two white girls walking past a group of black men; a teenage girl sitting on a bed, one man caressing her while another seems to be waiting his turn. Despite the fact that there is no immediate drama in either photograph the threat of something is profoundly there. The need to worry for another arrives: Will these girls get mugged, or worse? Is she being forced to be with these men? However, upon revisiting and spending further time with the photographs my thoughts deviated from concern to interrogation: Why are these girls in a clearly perilous area? What are they there for?
Being pulled into the conflict of the images I quickly forgot they were false, because in actuality they’re not. The fabrication of the particular events captured doesn’t change the reality this is happening. The works excel not just in the scenarios they’ve depicted but in the execution of this depiction. In not being blatantly aggressive episodes, the artist has us wanting to follow where the story many end and questioning how it began.
You want to know what’s happening, why’s it happening, and how is it going to end.

Suggestions for photographers to prepare for, and information about, the review event:
Photographers will wait in a line behind a reviewer they want to see. If that line is long and you see a reviewer that is available, jump out of line and go see them - you never know!
You will see approx 7 to 10 people, depending on wait time. There is no guarantee which reviewers you will see.
You will have 10 minutes to present your work to each reviewer, listen to their comments, and ask questions. A 'one minute warning' will be given
We recommend bringing one body of work with 10 to 20 images - big enough that they get a sense but not so big that it is difficult to get through in the time available.
No portfolio over 16x20 will be allowed for ease of reviewers.
Make the packing material easy to get through so as not to slow down the review. Time spent on packing/unpacking is included in your 10 minutes.

The objective of this night is an emphasis on honest feedback that photographers rarely get. . Photographers will range from students to
established photographers. Topics issued will be:
· How is their presentation
· What is working and what is not
· Are their consistency problems
· Etc.

Suggestions for photographers to prepare for, and information about, the review event:
Photographers will wait in a line behind a reviewer they want to see. If that line is long and you see a reviewer that is available, jump out of line and go see them - you never know!
You will see approx 7 to 10 people, depending on wait time. There is no guarantee which reviewers you will see.
You will have 10 minutes to present your work to each reviewer, listen to their comments, and ask questions. A 'one minute warning' will be given
We recommend bringing one body of work with 10 to 20 images - big enough that they get a sense but not so big that it is difficult to get through in the time available.
No portfolio over 16x20 will be allowed for ease of reviewers.
Make the packing material easy to get through so as not to slow down the review. Time spent on packing/unpacking is included in your 10 minutes.

Kim Reierson -Body Presenters @ Robin Rice Gallery 5/5/10
See you there!The Robin Rice Gallery announces "Body Presenters", an exhibition of photographs by Kim Reierson. An opening reception will be held on May 5th, 2010 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. The show runs through June 20, 2010.
Kim Reierson's images in "Body Presenters" are at once as intensely private as personal sensory and brashly public as an aesthetic immortalization. Bodybuilding is alternately referred to by its practitioners and admirers as both an art and sport, and Reierson's camera works to convey a similarly duplicitous take— roaming backstage among the icons, she captures details of their collective camaraderie and untiring self-address, in turn revealing the spirit of competition and simultaneous artistic illusions.
Reierson, in homage to the emerging Fin de Siecle roots of bodybuilding, has chosen to present the works of this exhibition in glass-domed frames dating from 1870 to 1920. These selected frames she sought after and compiled are a piece of American history, having once encased diverse images from our nation's past.

During her extensive travels throughout different parts of the globe, artist Leah Oates has managed to capture the essence, similarities, differences, integration, complexity and interaction between the natural and the urban landscape. In Oates's images each fuse together in such harmony that they coexist with the other. From Finland to Beijing to Newfoundland to the roads of America, Road Trip is a survey of Oates's photographic vision over the past 10 years. One must always be aware of nature in our every day surroundings as it might not be there for long due to the changing world that we live in today. It is also relevant for all of us to realize how the environment around us affects humans, our behavior and the future. Through this portfolio of fifteen carefully selected and beautiful photographs we are able to see through Oates's eyes and travel on a poetic photographic journey to urban and natural landscapes in many locations.

The Road Trip portfolio is an edition of 10 with 5 ap's and hand signed traditional photographs. There are 15 -8"x10" in each portfolio with a bio, image sheet, certificate, and an essay all housed in an archival portfolio box. Five copies sold.
