I am very happy and proud to be part of Dan Cooney Fine Art Late Summer Emerging Art Auction. This photograph in particular is very special to me and dedicated to my friend  Igor Jong . This photograph is part of my new ongoing photography series Nightclubbing and it is the very first  photograph released from it.

For a short while, the job loss, the closing of businesses, corporations and the Internet addiction has forced people to relocate, leave the city or stay home. All of the sudden, small club and at times obscure venues starting to open and with it a new wave of creative, in full costume galore crowd reminiscent of the 1980’s and 1990’s era. The new ‘’Lady Gaga generation’’ is out and proud.  This photo in particular is dedicated to my friend and club buddy, Igor Jong. We lost Igor this summer. Sasha Bezzubov and Jessica Sucher
Sasha Bezzubov and Jessica Sucher have been collaborating since 2002. Their work merges shared interests in the politics of tourism and pilgrimage. In 2006, they received a Fulbright Scholarship to India for their project The Searchers, which builds on their previous work, The Gringo Project (Bezzubov, 1997-2003) and Expats and Natives (Bezzubov and Sucher, 2002-2005). Their work has been exhibited in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami and The Netherlands. A monograph of Bezzubov's most recent solo project, Wildfire, is forthcoming from Nazraeli Press in June 2009. His work is in the collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art of Giving Something Foundation, and numerous private collections, and has been widely exhibited and published. Bezzubov received his MFA from the Yale University School of Art. In addition to photography, Sucher works as a curator and producer of artists' projects. She currently works at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. She received degrees from Brown University and New York University.

The new auction format is slated to launch in early 2010, and as I know you have a large following of emerging artists on your blog, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind posting the open call? Here is a little bit more info about it:

In participation with Daniel Cooney Fine Art and iGavel Associates, iGavel is pleased to present our Emerging Artists Auctions. These auctions include a curated selection of works of art by promising emerging talent. The auction is a showcase before an audience of collectors, dealers, museum professionals and gallery owners. To ensure equal and fair representation all works are presented with reserves set at $200.

Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis. To submit you must meet the following requirements:

- Undergraduate student works will not be accepted
- All mediums are welcome besides installation works
- Artists cannot have gallery or commercial representation
- Some prior exhibition or publication experience is required

To submit, please fill out the form below. Submit one image per work. Images must be at least 800 pixels on the longest side, jpeg saved for web, below 200kb in size, and SRGB color space. Each artist will be required to sign a contract with iGavel. Artists receive a 50% commission on all sold works. FAMILY MATTERS-Tim Roda @ Dan Cooney Fine Art Gallery 9/10/09

Here is one good show opening September 10, 2009 that you should not miss!

Tim Roda's work is so unique in so many ways!

I had the privilege of a show preview last week and found the Family Matters body of work series very refreshing, interesting and quite well executed by a self taught photographer. His incorporation and creative set designs, art installations, usage of props and father and son photography collaboration makes the work fascinating to the eye.

Such family collaboration, reminded me the kind of photos of Paloma Picasso making drawings right next to Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali with his wife Gala. In my opinion, the Family Matters series, which is done in black and white has a very strong , sometimes dark, playful, intense quality reminiscent of the Spanish or Italian cinema where the intensity of family relations and interaction is portrayed with a lot of drama, rather voyeuristic and dark humor.

The quality of the photographs is raw and a bit grainy, which in this case work very well because, it adds a vintage quality but, it also can look very of the moment, like a good experiment. It also adds a great and comforting feeling of nostalgia. My favorite one (even though I liked the whole series is the one at top (Centaurus).

This show folks it is a must see. It will remind most of us , when little if you , used to play with your dad. To me it is one of the most precious memories . The photograph's sizes are a good ones , the editions are small and the price is extremely affordable. Kudos to Dan Cooney for such a good and interesting find. Thanks for letting me preview the work.

Tim Roda For Immediate Release, August 27, 2009

Family Matters Exhibition Dates: September 10 – October 31



We are proud to announce the gallery’s first exhibition of photographs by Tim Roda, titled Family Matters. The photographs that culminate in this exhibition examine the relationship between Roda and his son, Ethan. Furthermore, they are metaphorical memories of Roda’s childhood, family history and his relationship with his own father.

The scenes are played out in various studios and locations from Montana, Washington State, New York and Italy. Roda, whose formal training is in Ceramics, makes all of the stage settings for the work. The material used is disposable or reusable, mostly clay, cardboard, gaffer’s tape and other found material. The resulting photographs elaborate the artist’s approach and are presented as objects that the artists declares are “perfect in my mind”. The formal presentation displays rough edges, irregular margins and haphazard tonal range that reflect the quality of the stages.

The images reflect the struggles and joy between father and son. In one image the artist and his young collaborator are dressed in found and home made feminine attire gently touching each other fingertips in front of classic Italian statues. That playful and gentle moment contrasts another image where the son portrays an angry screaming gladiator dragging his father, face to pavement, across a cobblestone street by his handcuffed wrists.

Roda has exhibited internationally in many solo gallery and museum exhibitions. He was a 2008 - 09 recipient of the Fullbright Award to Italy. The artist and his son will be speaking on their collaboration at the gallery October 17th at 3:00.

Guidelines for applying to Project 5’s Portfolio Review


Date of Review: Sunday, September 20th

Project 5 is proud to announce our first group Portfolio Review in New York City. Project 5 is a unique collaboration between Amador Gallery, ClampArt, Daniel Cooney Fine Art, Foley Gallery and Sasha Wolf Gallery that has grown out of years of friendship and shared ambitions in the photography market.

Project 5 hopes to foster a supportive environment for artists to receive constructive criticism and build an ongoing dialogue about their work with art world professionals.

After the formal reviews conclude we will have a short one hour meet and greet so that all the artists and reviewers will have an opportunity to meet each other and share contacts, ideas, etc.

To apply for Project 5’s Portfolio Review please send:
-A written description of your work
- A biography that outlines your education and professional experience.
- A link to your website, if you have one.
- 10 jpegs sent either in a zip file or attached to an email (or series of emails). The jpgs should be 100 dpi and 6 inches at the largest dimension.

Project 5’s Portfolio Review will consist of three 20-minute reviews with three of Project 5’s gallerists. Great consideration will be given to the matching of gallery owners and artists based on the strengths and experience of each.

Deadline for receipt of materials for this review will be September 6th and the artists will be notified of acceptance by September 9th. A $250 check made out to Project 5 will be due by September 12th.

This unique cooperation between gallerists has grown from years of friendships and shared ambitions in the photography market. Reaching out to one another to create these new initiatives seemed like the next step for these 5 to collectively grow their shared ideals while maintaining their own distinguished programming.

The galleries, referred to here as, Project 5, will begin their collaboration with a portfolio of 5 images by 5 artists, one from each of the participating Project 5 galleries to be released on September 15.

All images will be unique to the portfolio—made specifically by the participating artists for this project. The artists included are: Olaf Otto Becker from Amador, Jill Greenberg from ClampArt, Stuart O’Sullivan from Daniel Cooney, Thomas Allen from Foley Gallery and Guido Castagnoli from Sasha Wolf Gallery.

The portfolios will be released in an edition of 30, priced with new collectors in mind at $2500. Each print will be signed and numbered by the artist and the portfolio will be enclosed in a custom made clothbound case. The portfolio offers collectors the unique opportunity of starting a relationship with five different artists and galleries at the same time.

Additionally, Project 5 is introducing a series of Portfolio Reviews for artists who feel they would benefit from the valuable input of these gallerists’ expertise. The first Portfolio review will be Sunday, September 20th. Project 5 asks that artists send ten jpgs to projectfivecontact@gmail.com for consideration. Artists can contact any of the participating galleries for more information.

Another exciting collaboration will be a monthly series of Artist’s Salons that will alternate between Project 5’s galleries. The first Salon will be held at Daniel Cooney Fine Art on Saturday, September 26th at 3:00 p.m. and will feature four emerging artists presenting their latest bodies of work for a half hour each. Participating artists are Timothy Briner, Yola Monakhov, Jessica Dimmock, and Cara Phillips.

While the work in this group show by Grant Willing, Anna Gonzalez-Huix Miro, Alana Celii, Jemma Evans, Alia Kahan, Fiona Struengmann, Fernando Ibarra, Lorena Costa, Jonathan Baskin, and Daniel Zuchnik may differ from one another strikingly in terms of its subject matter, meaning, genre, and influences, the exhibition ultimately serves as telling glimpse into the preoccupations and perspectives of this next generation of emerging photographers. In this spirit of collective individuality the exhibition’s title, G.W.A.G.H.M.A.C.J.E.A.K.F.S.F.I.L.C.J.B.D.Z., is an acronym formed from the initials of each photographer’s name.

Works in the exhibition include:

GRANT WILLING’s Svart Metall, an investigation into the themes and ideals of the Black Metal music genre—a violent, often cacophonous style of music that explores ancient pagan and satanic views.

Nobody at Home by ANNA GONZALEZ-HUIX MIRO, portraying the artist’s body swallowed up by the landscape around her as a gesture of transcendence and contemplation.

ALANA CELII’s visual exploration of nostalgia, adolescent discovery, beauty, and the uncomfortably strange, using anecdotes from her own past.

Fashion work by JEMMA EVANS that emphasizes a cinematic and narrative feel.

ALIA KAHAN’s exploration of the self and the human condition through both metaphysical and psychoanalytic terms.

A combination of illustration and photography by FIONA STRUENGMANN that slips in and out of view—functioning as a type of meditational drawing.

FERNANDO IBARRA’s images that transport the viewer, subject, and photographer away from ordinary life and into the realm of fantasy and fetishism.

LORENA COSTA’s portraits of young gay men—a visual study about gender and the female gaze.

Exploration of the power dynamics between photographer and model by JONATHAN BASKIN.

DANIEL ZUCHNIK’s genre-bending melding of documentary work and fashion photography.

Laurel Ptak serves as the curatorial advisor for G.W.A.G.H.M.A.C.J.E.A.K.F.S.F.I.L.C.J.B.D.Z. She is an independent curator based in New York City and founder of the blog iheartphotograh.com.

Daniel Cooney Fine Art hosts the exhibition. DCFA is a gallery located in Chelsea committed to showing the best in emerging art and under-recognized work by established artists.
