Printed Matter - Warehouse Sale! June 4 & 5 , 2010

Printed Matter is pleased to announce The Warehouse Sale, an exclusive and limited-time offering of hundreds of titles from our inventory at deep discounts – up to 60% off! The event is being hosted by Paula Cooper Gallery at 521 West 21st St, and Printed Matter will be joined by our neighbor 192 Books, who will be offering a selection of discounted publications as well.
The opening night preview on June 3rd, from 6 – 9 pm will also serve as a benefit for Printed Matter. Tickets to the benefit/opening night reception, which will feature artist/DJs spinning records, will be $10.00, available only at the door. In addition, new print editions by Mark Gonzales and Ari Marcopolous will be available exclusively at the benefit door for only $75.00 each, and includes free admission to the event. The Warehouse Sale will continue Friday and Saturday, June 4th and 5th, from 10am – 6pm, free and open to the public.

Printed Matter is almost 35 years old, and over the years we have collected more work than we have room to house: our shelves, closets and cabinets are literally busting with artists’ books, editions, and multiples. For one evening and two days only, this great bounty will spill out of storage boxes and the backs of shelves onto tables lining the Paula Cooper Gallery space at 521 West 21st Street. Vintage artists books and pamphlets from the 1970’s. 80’s and 90’s; new publications; a large selection of miniature book works; artists records, cassettes, CD’s and videos; T-shirts and other artists’ multiples; both old and new Printed Matter publications; and much more will be on sale at irresistibly discounted prices!

The opening night of the Warehouse Sale is also a benefit for Printed Matter, Inc., a non-profit arts organization. Admission is an affordable and accessible $10.00. Printed Matter will also be releasing four new fundraising editions – two screen prints by Mark Gonzales and two photocopy prints by Ari Marcopolous – each in a signed and numbered edition of 50, that will be available exclusively at the opening reception for only $75 each. Purchase of an edition comes with free admission to the event. There is a sales limit of two each of the four prints per customer. DJ’s Alexis Georgopolous and Nick Relph will be spinning an eclectic and spirited mix of records until 9 PM, and free refreshments will be served courtesy of Printed Matter and Brooklyn Brewery.

Feeling a bit sorry for myself for spending the holidays working and much so of it alone, I decided to take a little spin through Chelsea Gallery District and went back to Printed Matter who now, has a wonderful curated show called Giftland X with all kinds of art goodies. I found and bought this pretty cool photograph by Kyle Thurman a very cool upside down Palm Tree (missing Miami and its weather already)and I just had to have it. At only an edition of five and framed for only $50.00 seriously...got and get yours they are only 4 left. Ah... and don't look for the 1/5...it is already smoking hot on display in my kitchen/dining area.

all . I went to the Rita Ackermann book signing yesterday and had the pleasure to meet Rita. Pretty, friendly, great accent,sexy like a cat and so, soo talented!

I bought the record cover illustrated here and it has a different print on each side. The record off course plays and Rita signed both prints for me!...$26.00 USD

Then...It gets better...She made a limited edition of those prints of 50 and each one side of the record was painted individually and the image was distorted with paint and more drawing . In other words , for only $250.00 USD you can obtain a one of a kind version of it and off course signed by Rita.

I don't buy paintings or drawings anymore but, sorry you can let this one pass up. So hurry and contact Max @Printed Matter and tell him you know me to get one ASAP. Rita is a brilliant artist and in person that same energy emanates from her.Her solo show at Andrea Rosen was one of my favorities of this season so far.Remember only 50 copies and you get 2 different one of kind works 12 x 12 signed by Rita!

Synopsis: Under Pressure from 2006 to 2007 was published on the occasion of Hungarian artist, musician, and performer Rita Ackermann’s inclusion in the 2008 Whitney Biennial. It is a collection of recent collage work in which Ackermann deftly combines newspaper clippings, paintings, drawings, and images of women throughout art history to create powerful totems of female sexuality and physicality. Writing in The New York Times, Roberta Smith described the collage works thus: “Ms. Ackermann is equally at home with scissors or ballpoint pen; with finely rendered figures and poetic phrases or words and images clipped from newspapers and magazines; and with clogged compositions or spare ones. Women--as victors, victims or silent witnesses--appear in all situations

In 2007, the FCC in its benevolent wisdom gave WFMU permission to erect a much needed booster antenna in Manhattan. As any listener in Brooklyn or mid-town Manhattan can attest, the station's signal quality varies greatly from block to block with vast areas of the New York metropolitan area falling into black holes where WFMU's signal is unable to come in.

In order to raise funds for our new antenna and to celebrate WFMU's longstanding relationship with the arts community both in the New York area and beyond, the station will be holding an art benefit show at Printed Matter from December 6th to December 13th and also selling work online at art.wfmu.org. The site will go live shortly after Dec. 6th and will include additional artwork for sale that we were not able to fit into the show due to space constraints.

The opening for the WFMU Art Benefit will take place on Saturday December 6th from 5pm to 7pm. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue between 21st and 22nd Street in Chelsea.

The show's line-up, much the like the station's programming, is decidedly freeform with a mix of well established and emerging artists as well as a wide variety of mediums represented including drawing, painting, photography, print and collage. Many of the pieces in the show are new works that have been created especially for this benefit.

In keeping with the somewhat egalitarian nature of the station it was important to us that much of the art on offer be affordable. To this end WFMU commissioned several artists to create print editions while other
artists have kindly agreed to sell their work for considerably less than their usual retail prices. More often than not, art benefits tend to be structured as auctions, a process which few people other than seasoned art collectors are comfortable with or enjoy. All the pieces in this benefit will be sold at fixed prices and many items will be priced to sell so come early.

New Photography is the annual fall showcase of significant recent work in photography. This year's exhibition features the work of Josephine Meckseper (German, b. 1964) and Mikhael Subotzky (South African, b. 1981). In her photographs and signature vitrine displays, Meckseper explores the media's strategy of mixing political news and advertising content. Her installation includes a selection of life-size photographs of models dressed in vintage lingerie from the 1950s, from her 2006 Blow-Up series. Also included is Quelle International (2008), a new group of pictures culled from a mail-order catalogue popular in Germany in the 1970s that have been printed on reflective Mylar. In both series the artist uses the semantic codes of advertising to address issues of power and consumerism.

Subotzky's recent body of photographic work, Beaufort West (2006-2008), portrays a small desert town in South Africa's Western Cape blighted by unemployment, rampant crime, domestic violence, poverty, and segregation. The artist was drawn to this subject by the local jail, which is strangely situated in the center of the town, in a traffic circle at the intersection of the main highway between Johannesburg and Cape Town. His photographs of Beaufort West's various populations—inmates, outcasts, families, residents, and passersby—formulate a stirring vision of South Africa's strained post-apartheid condition.
