School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents "Being American," an exhibition surveying responses by visual artists to some of the most pressing social issues in America today. Culled from various forms of contemporary visual culture, the works address topics ranging from recent environmental catastrophes to the pervading effects of the economic crisis; from the long shadow of 9/11 and two overseas wars to the home-front debates surrounding religious tolerance, gay marriage, capital punishment and firearms possession. Curated by Visual Arts Gallery Director Francis Di Tommaso, the exhibition will be on view at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26 Street, New York City, from November 22 - December 21.

Curator Francis Di Tommaso explains, "The twenty artists in this show have twenty stories to tell about the experience of being American today. Though many would not normally exhibit in the same venue-the work of some is almost never seen outside of the printed page-they all have immediately accessible and also exquisitely nuanced commentaries to make on American culture."

SVA 2009 MFA Thesis Exhibition

I finally got a chance to go and see the MFA Photography , Video and Related Media Department Thesis Exhibition of The School of Visual Arts. The exhibition was curated by Bonnie Yochelson. See below my favorite picks of the show:

This was my favorite work. Great installation, reminded me of Eve Sussman's installation  currently on display at the Winkleman Gallery. I had been looking at Lissa Rivera's work for a while. There is a lot of talent over here and, I intent to eventually be able to collect some of her work.

Mentors Exhibit @ SVA-Highlights

Ok Folks...after letting my hair down all weekend...back to business!

I meant to talk about this exhibit earlier but, La Vida Loca got into my system for a few days and it was hard to shake it off ! 

Here are some highlights from the Mentors Exhibit @ The School of Visual Arts. Most of the work was interesting but, in my opinion and taste there were two newcomers that really caught my eye and that eventually, will like to include in my photography collection. One is Sean Gutowski and the other is Bon Duke.

I went around the whole exhibit and kept going back to the work of these two. Sean Gutowski had a photograph tilted Burning Ship,2009 and it really dominated the wall not only for its size (54 x 44) but also for its quality and theme. I am not a big fan of large photographs but this one, looked amazing and can be an exception. This Burning Ship,2009 image in particular is quite reminiscent to me of the work of photographer Lori Nix.

My other favorite was the work of Bon Duke , who I got to meet because he was a model for Amy Elkins Wallflower photo series.

With Bon, I got to see more range of his work including video , installation and photography. 

Bon had two photographs on display that I became interested on. One was a portrait of a friend(Bruise,2008) days after being hit by a car (something that I can relate to) and a photograph (Cup ,1) of a bunch of cigarettes in a glass and an injection filled with the same liquid that after a few days  if used, can be lethal and cause death. The Bruise photograph reminded me of Francesca Romeo portraiture work and the Cup 1,2008 photograph reminded me and had an effect of the work of Cara Phillips, Singular Beauty Series  which, I am a big fan . Keep an eye on these two newcomers...you never know!

NEW YORK.- School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Mentors,” an exhibition of work by BFA Photography Department students inspired by their year-long mentorship with key figures in the New York arts community. Drawn from the ranks of city’s best-known photographers, curators, art directors, publishers, art dealers, critics and writers, the mentors are paired with students based upon their field of expertise and the student’s area of concentration. The 2008 – 2009 mentors include creative director Fabien Baron, cinematographer and SVA alumnus Harris Savides, New York Times writer Philip Gefter, and photographers Ari Marcoupolis, Sally Gall and Gregory Crewdson, among others. The exhibition will be on view through April 25 at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26 Street, 15th Floor, New York City.

Established in 1992, the Mentors program at SVA was designed to cultivate relationships between established and emerging artists and to introduce new talent to the New York arts community. Stephen Frailey, chair of the BFA Photography Department and curator of the exhibition, explains, “We are always seeking to provide our students with opportunities that support their growth as professional artists. Working with these mentors offers our students an invaluable learning experience, one that inspires them to take their work further.”

The BFA Photography Department at SVA offers students a full range of options in the study of photography: commercial, fine art, fashion and documentary. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art technical facilities; a faculty of nearly 100 members, including not only working photographers but photo editors, critics, publishers and photography dealers; and a curriculum that integrates photographic genres, identities and ambitions. SVA’s diversity in curriculum and the faculty’s professional experience offer students the freedom and support to explore different directions in photography.

School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City is an established leader and innovator in the education of artists. From its inception in 1947, the faculty has been comprised of professionals working in the arts and art-related fields. SVA provides an environment that nurtures creativity, inventiveness and experimentation, enabling students to develop a strong sense of identity and a clear direction of purpose.

The Visual Arts Gallery, located at 601 West 26th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues, 15th floor, is open Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm; closed on Sundays and public holidays.
