2010 PhotoLucida Critical Mass-Judging

I just finished judging the last phase of 2010 Photolucida Critical Mass. From 181 Finalists, I voted for my favorite 50. There a lot of diverse work in this last batch.Hoping that the last 50 selected ones truly reflect the whole range, techniques and themes of the current times we are living  and what photography is today. Best of luck to all and soon enough we will know who are the winners.

Carl  Bower-Plaza Boivar, Miss Coffee, Manizales

The photograph above is from Carl Bower one of my very favorite series''Chasing Cinderella'' and  2009 Photolucida Critical Mass winner. A year later and the series are still very clear in my mind. That is when you know... that you made the right decision.

This one is coming all the way from The West Coast via DNJ Gallery in Los Angeles  and by Photographer Richard Giles.

Happy Shopping!

Here is more info:
In celebration of Autumn, dnj Gallery is pleased to offer a limited edition photograph, "15012 W. Avenue D," by the artist Richard Gilles. This single image is available in an edition of 50 photographs; the 3.5" x 8.5" inkjet print is $50.

Richard Gilles, 15012 W. Avenue D, inkjet print, 2009, 3.5 x 8.5 inches
In his panoramic photographs, Gilles' subjects are the bits and pieces that lie abandoned along America's roadways. This detritus, ordinarily lacking any real significance, is elevated as it becomes the central focus of the picture. Is it a minimalist object whose message is only that which the viewer brings to it? Or does it have another meaning? Either way, Gilles' photographs reveal an optimistic appreciation for the simplicity of the object.

Please contact the gallery for further information.

Aperture and the Photography Program in the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons The New School for Design present the latest installment of the Parsons Lecture Series: photographer
Alex Prager in conversation with gallerist Yancey Richardson. With striking color and carefully constructed compositions, the self-taught Prager (b. 1979) represents young women—often wearing glamorous, retro clothing—in beautifully staged, cinematic portraits. Inspired by both the directors of dark melodrama—Alfred Hitchcock, Douglas Sirk, David Lynch—and the innovative color photography of William Eggleston, Guy Bourdin, and others, Prager depicts a Technicolor world whose dazzling surfaces reflect a subtle sense of unease in the faces of her women, and in the implied narratives that lurk within the frames.Referencing the stylistic conventions of the film still, she creates an atmosphere of tension and brittle beauty, heightened by the contrast between location and her dolled-up subjects. In Prager's synthetic universe, female behavior is given a gloss, underscored by suggestions of drama, suspense, and uncertainty. She has had numerous exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad featuring her three series, Polyester, The Big Valley, and Week-end. Her work will be shown in New Photography 2010 at New York's Museum of Modern Art in September. Solo exhibitions include the Robert Berman Gallery, Santa Monica; Michael Hoppen Gallery, London; M + B Gallery, Los Angeles; Gallery Ring Cube, Tokyo; and Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York. She lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Yancey Richardson is one of the preeminent dealers of fine art photography in the U.S. A member of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), Richardson brings over twenty-eight years of experience to the gallery's exhibition program. Formerly housed in the renowned 560 Broadway building in historic Soho, Yancey Richardson Gallery is now located at 535 West 22nd Street, in the heart of New York's Chelsea art district.

Aperture Foundation's public programming is made possible, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. This program also receives generous support from the Kettering Family Foundation, the Henry Nias Foundation, and the Milton and Sally Avery Arts Foundation, and the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) Foundation.

After the Women of Paradise Road
Photographs and installation by Nathaniel Ward
Curated by mr. and mrs. amani olu

Nat Ward-After the Women of Paradise Road #1, 2010, Archival Pigment Print, 50 x 40 inches
The Wild Project and mr. and mrs. amani olu are pleased to present After the Women of Paradise Road, the first solo exhibition of photographs by Nathaniel Ward. Influenced and reminiscent of the Pictures Generation artists, Ward focuses his attention on the commodification of women who grace the covers of various adult periodicals that are distributed in magazine vending boxes along Paradise Road in Las Vegas. The appropriated imagery reveals women in a variety of clichéd sexual poses, expressions, and gestures––creating an almost anonymous sexual object that is desired by many visitors to Las Vegas. The images are heightened by their surface detritus and amplified layers of separation between the viewer and the women who posed for the original photograph.

Nathaniel Ward (b. 1983) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Ward received his BFA in Photography & Imaging from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2006. Ward has exhibited internationally since 2005; his work has been included in exhibitions at Center for Architecture, Gulf + Western Gallery, Broadway Gallery all in New York and at SCOPE, Miami, and Art at Kirchberg, Luxembourg. His work has been published in print publications and online, including Bon International Magazine, Solutions Magazine and Artinfo, The Exposure Project and Humble Arts Foundation. He received the Tobias Award for excellence in Photography and Imaging in 2005 and the Constantiner Fellowship in 2006.

The Wild Project is an environmentally conscious venue for contemporary theater, film and visual arts and is dedicated to supporting the arts by offering space and resources to emerging artists.

Jeff Sheng - ''Don't Ask, Don't Tell''-9/18/10 @ Kaycee Olsen Gallery- Los Angeles, Ca.

If you are in the Los Angeles /West Coast area, you have to go and see this show.I had been following Jeff Sheng ''Don't Ask , Don't Tell'' series since meeting Kaycee Olsen during 2009 Miami Art Basel . I think this body of work is not only important and timely but, also will make you comprehend and get an idea of the sacrifice that our gay and lesbian service men and women had to endure to serve, fight and protect America.I also recommend you to, start collecting this work and get his monograph.

Congratulations to Jeff Shen and to Kaycee for her new gallery in Culver City. The gallery has a great program with really great new artists. I paid a visit and planning and want to include several of her artists from her program in future shows that  I plan to curate.I already had  shown the work of Jesse Finley Reed as part of The Naked Truth West -LA.

You can hear and see in this NY Times video in his own words- Jeff Sheng himself describing the serieshttp://video.nytimes.com/video/2010/03/17/style/1247467379838/the-author-speaks.html?scp=2&sq=Jeff%20Sheng%20Don't%20Ask,%20Don't%20Tell''&st=cse

September 18 - October 23, 2010
Saturday, September 18
                         - Artist Talk and Walkthrough

                         - 5:30 to 6:00 pm
                         - Reception for the Artist
                         - 6:00 to 8:00 pm

Kaycee Olsen Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition of photographer Jeff Sheng's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" series from September 18 to October 23, 2010. On Saturday, September 18, Sheng will give an Artist talk and walkthrough from 5:30 to 6:00pm and an opening reception will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Both will be open to the public.

The exhibition coincides with the release of Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Volume 2, a 100-page, full color publication, featuring the portraits of over forty closeted U.S. service members. Personal accounts of experiences in the military are also shared by a few of the individuals in the book. The foreword is written by Patrick J. Murphy, a U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania and a former Captain in the 82nd Airborne division, who introduced the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal bill into the House of Representatives. It also contains essays by discharged veteran Major Mike Almy, and celebrated LGBT activist David Mixner.

This exhibition will be the first ever to feature the photographs of service men and woman currently affected by the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, which mandates the immediate discharge of those persons in the United States military who are allegedly or openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. The show will feature 20 previously unseen images, which see the artist breaking away from the statically posed photographs of Volume 1. In these works, Sheng increasingly activates and dramatizes his subjects, further illuminating the unique and charged personal narrative behind each portrait.

In addition, we will be showing highlights from Jeff Sheng's "Fearless" series in the back project gallery. This body of work focuses on gay, lesbian and transgender high school and college athletes.

In 2010, Jeff Sheng has received the Photo District News Award and International Photophraphy Award for this body of work.

Tammy Rae Carland- Funny Face, I love You @ Silverman Gallery

Tammy Rae Carland- Images courtesy of Silverman Gallery

If you are in the Bay Area , San Francisco check out this show and please tell me all about it. Very intrigued by it!

Tammy Rae Carland
Funny Face, I Love You
September 10 - October 23, 2010
Opening Reception: September 10, 6 – 8PM

Silverman Gallery is pleased to present Funny Face, I Love You, an exhibition of new work by Tammy Rae Carland on view from September 10 - October 23, 2010.

The artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery features a suite of new photographs, a selection of mixed media works as well as a cast porcelain sculpture. Inspired by the history of female comedians, Carland explores questions of humor and desire,
juxtaposing images of empty stages with singular figures caught mid-act. These works isolate the body, focusing less on the artifice of public personas than the sheer spectacle of performing corporealities. Through these, Carland foregrounds the fragility and pathos inherent in these acts of vulnerability and self-humiliation—acts which also resonate with the unraveling of gender roles through acting out. Invariably, the conversation opens onto a larger meditation on the fragmentation of the body and the currency of the abject, while engaging the politics of performativity and the legacy of feminism.

Tammy Rae Carland received her MFA from UC Irvine, and also attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. Her work has been screened and exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berlin and Sydney. She has been featured in numerous publications, including Artforum and Pulse. She is co-founder and owner of Mr. Lady Records, an independent record label and video distribution company. She is currently chair of Photography at California College of Arts and Crafts. Her work will be including in an upcoming exhibition and catalog called Dissident Desires published by Aperture. Carland lives and works in Oakland, California.

When an ART Dealer crosses the line...

Recently I engaged in a dialogue with a overseas art dealer on a social network regarding a photographer whose work I own and was discussing maybe loaning a piece from my collection to a possible group show.

Well...so it happens that the NYC dealer of the artist in question got a handle of the conversation and decided to intercept the conversation and put the foot down as ''  all inquiries regarding ____ work need to be directed to the _____ Gallery by sending me also a personal email as well. Really?

Are some art dealers so desperate and tacky these days to try to control collectors art collections?

Mind you, I am not only an art collector, I review work, curate shows and among other things promote and write about artists and its shows?

There is a business etiquette that some art dealers need to learn that people like me have no interest or in the business of stealing artists. There is no competition here of any kind, If I like the work, I stick with it, support it, show it , bring it to dealers and even try to sell it all with the sole purpose of career building for the artist only.
If I ever wanted to open a gallery then you will have to worry about but, rest assured that, I had not intentions of it so please ...do not cross my path ever again...for your own benefit. Actions of this nature has its consequences...

Phil Toledano- A New Kind of Beauty- 9/9/10

What goes around...comes around...

Just a year ago , while doing the Pre- Screening juror  work for Photolucida's Critical Mass 2009 , I came across  Phil Toledano's A New Kind of Beauty series. I thought they were brilliantly shot and also posess a praiseworthy strong social message. I remember contacting Phil, friending him and also while I supported and raved about the work , they were some people (including jurors ) being  totally skeptic about it.

One thing you can say about me it is that when, I like and believe in some one's work, I put my faith in it no matter what others think about it.

October 2009, a few months later, I got a chance to curate UNSEEN at Randall Scott Gallery. One of the first artists I called was Phil and told him that, I wanted to show  Dinah  (shown here) , one of his Plastic Surgery portraits.
The piece sold during opening night to a NYC art collector. This work is not just for anybody and that is precisely why is  I like it so much. I find it extremely sophisticated and its future market will be for Museums and institutions.

This series was shown also at SCOPE during Miami Art Basel 2009 and Photo LA 2010 through hous Projects Gallery.

Now a Gallery in DUMBO will be showing the series in a solo show for Phil. Life comes around full circle. This gallery happens to be right next door from where UNSEEN was shown almost a year ago where Randall Scott is no longer open (relocating back to Wash DC).

I will be very happy and proud at the opening not only because, I support Phil and his creative  work but also because , I took a chance once again and at the end it seems to paid off...

See you at the opening and go and see this show!
Congratulations Phil!
