The auction includes 16 photographs selected by Phillips’photography specialist from The Collector’s Guide to Emerging Art Photography, a 180-page source book produced for collectors, art dealers, gallery directors, photo editors, museum professionals, and independent curators published by Humble Arts Foundation earlier this year. To further engage prospective buyers and to highlight the collaboration, Humble’s works will be on display in its own private viewing room.

KLOMPCHING GALLERY is delighted to open the 2009—2010 gallery season with the eagerly awaited exhibition of We English, by the British artist Simon Roberts. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Thursday, 10th September, 6pm—8:30pm, 2009.

Following on from the critically acclaimed Motherland series, that formed the inaugural exhibition at Klompching Gallery in October 2007, Roberts’s We English is a visually stunning tableaux of large format photographs that explore identity, attachment to home and the relationship between people and the land.

“In 2005, I spent a year traveling across Russia to produce Motherland, a book exploring the Russians' attachment to their homeland. This attachment to place was somewhat mysterious—simultaneously profound and banal—and it led me to think about my own sense of belonging and memory, identity and place. We English became another journey, not quite as epic as that across Russia, but involving a 1993 Talbot Express Swift Capri motorhome, my pregnant wife, our two-year-old daughter and a 5x4 large-format camera.”—Simon Roberts.

Informed by his predecessors Tony Ray-Jones, John Davies and Martin Parr, as well as the tradition of 16th-century Dutch and Flemish landscape painting, Simon Roberts’ new body of work is an unashamedly lyrical vision of the ways in which people congregate and interact with the landscape, through the common purpose of leisure. Through his images of the English at play, we witness sunbathers lounging in Gloucestershire, hillwalkers miniaturized by the grand hills of the Wasdale Valley, the somewhat curious Mad Maldon Mud Race in Essex and the sparse quietness of surfers on the waters off the Salcombe Sands in Devon. We English is an insightful and determined series of photographs, two years in the making, and that forms Roberts’ second significant body of work exploring notions of nationhood.

Simon Roberts has been published and exhibited widely, with his photographs represented in public and private collections, including the Deutsche Börse Art Collection and the Wilson Centre for Photography (UK), amongst others. He is the recipient of several notable awards, including a PDN’s 30 (2004) and the Royal Photographic Society Vic Odden Award (2007) for achievement in the art of photography by a British photographer under 35.

We English is published by Chris Boot Ltd., forming Roberts’ second monograph. Simon Roberts will give an artist talk about We English, together with a book signing, on Friday 11th September, 6:30pm at the KLOMPCHING GALLERY.

Upcoming exhibitions of We English include Simon Roberts’ first solo museum exhibition at the National Media Museum (UK), March—September 2010.

Ok Folks...here another one for that September 10 evening Art shows Opening Extravaganza. Just take a Chelsea Art District gallery map, put red dots and connect the dots so, you can cover a lot of ground through the evening!
This is Juergen Teller, a must see!

For his fifth exhibition at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, Juergen Teller will present an exhibition entitled Paradis, on view at the 540 West 26th Street location. The photographs were originally commissioned for the French magazine, Paradis.

Blurring the distinction between his commercial and non-commercial work, Teller takes a story-telling approach to this series, in which he revisits two of his previous subjects – Charlotte Rampling and Raquel Zimmermann. Shot alone one evening at the Musee du Louvre in Paris, this nude study features large-scale photographs of the two women as they move amongst the masterpieces housed in the museum and captures the intimacy between photographer and subject. The women's lack of vanity is revealed as they are shot at an uncomfortable proximity, blending their bodies with Classical statues and standing before Leonardo's Mona Lisa. Teller removes the artifice between photographer and subject, leaving only the purity of each image, and unlike the sculptures in the museum's collection, his photographs do not present a standard of beauty but are more akin to a tribute to women and the human form.

The exhibition will be on view from 10 September – 17 October 2009 at 540 West 26th Street, New York City. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10AM – 6PM.

On 11 September Juergen Teller will be signing copies of Marc Jacobs Advertising 1998-2009 at Dashwood Books at 33 Bond Street from 6PM - 8PM.

Well, I know there is a great amount of shows in the NYC area but, If you happen to be in Philadelphia I urge you to see this one and tell me all about it. I really like Nadine Rovner's photography...actually quite a lot and she is on top of my list of photographers that as soon as I get a chance, will love to have in my photography collection. I mean seriously, love, love her themes , her nostalgic 70's photography feel , the color saturation...everything!

So... I will try to go to Philly when the Manhattan show opening madness calms down a bit (there is some really great shows opening this week! ..see previous blog posts) and make a point of seeing these two cool great shows.

Finding inspiration in the suburban landscape of southern New Jersey where she was raised, Philadelphia photographer Nadine Rovner creates works that are part reality, part cinematic fantasy. Personal Views is an effort to present the depth and richness of photographic portraiture that is being made by Philadelphia-area artists. The exhibition developed out of a recognition that some of the most accomplished and interesting contemporary portraiture is being made here, and features seven local female artists: Justyna Badach, Rita Bernstein, Jessica Todd Harper, Andrea Modica, Nadine Rovner, Sarah Stolfa, and Zoe Strauss. Evidence of this recognition is visible in the highly praised recent books by Jessica Todd Harper (Interior Exposure), Zoe Strauss (America) and Sarah Stolfa (The Regulars). Other emerging artists in Personal Views, Justyna Badach, Rita Bernstein, and Nadine Rovner, are similarly seeing their work recognized through local and national awards, competitions and exhibitions. And further adding to the city’s gravity in this genre is the recent arrival of renowned portrait photographer Andrea Modica, who took a teaching position at Drexel University. While these artists are not joined by a single movement or aesthetic view, the convergence of so much talent and strong work and the visibility of these artists through their books, exhibitions and other projects has created a palpable sense of momentum in local photography and a greater public interest in portraiture. The exhibition will open with a reception on Wednesday, September 16, from 6-8pm.

Melanie Flood Projects is pleased to present Under the Glass Bell, A Dream, an exhibition of photographs by Grace Kim. The stark black and white images are taken from Kim’s series Love Hotel, which feature intimate portraits of unmade beds at love hotels in Seoul, South Korea.

Couples use love hotels frequently in Korea to engage in secret love affairs. Captured just after their departure, Kim’s lyrical impressions provide access to an unknown world, highlighting private scenes that are generally inaccessible to outsiders.

The exhibition title, Under the Glass Bell, A Dream, is a reference and homage to the writer Anaïs Nin, who used the glass bell as a metaphor in her short story Under a Glass Bell. Nin describes the protagonists’ lives as encapsulated by a pristine façade, one that shields them from the realities of the outside world. Their lives appear to exist ‘under a glass bell’, the kind used to protect bouquets of flowers. Kim likens the glass bell to the facades used by those who conduct affairs and other activities in secret. Her photographs mimic the intersection between reality and appearance, searching for moments of beauty to encapsulate and make her own.

Grace Kim was born in Queens, New York, studied photography at the International Center of Photography and currently resides in Brooklyn. She recently created a limited edition artist book that contains miniature photographs from the Love Hotel series. It will be on view and available for purchase at the opening.

The exhibition opening will feature music by Steve Sang, a new wave/industrial DJ and creative director/co-founder of Seven New York.

Melanie Flood Projects is an artist salon specializing in contemporary photography based in the Brooklyn home of Melanie Flood. The gallery brings artists and art lovers together in a space that juxtaposes the aesthetic dialogue of fine art with the haphazard and personal existence of the domestic setting, highlighting contrasts and commonalities in unexpected ways. The aim of Melanie Flood Projects is to create a fresh and informal meeting point for looking at, reflecting on, and talking about art.

The actual wedding was last weekend in Connecticut.It was a beautiful reception , with beautiful people, great drinks (way too many for me!), great food and the most important thing was to celebrate the union and commitment of two beautiful souls in love...AMAZING!

Collette was as usual the perfect host and Mickalene's mom was such a presence and radiates great energy ...I want her to adopt me!

It was very intimate but, just perfect!

Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new images and sculptures by Simen Johan, entitled Until the Kingdom Comes. The exhibition will open on Thursday, September 10, and close on Saturday, October 31, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, September 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In his ongoing series Until the Kingdom Comes, begun in 2004 and first shown at the gallery in 2006, Simen Johan depicts a natural world hovering between reality, fantasy and nightmare. Merging traditional photographic techniques with digital methods, Johan’s images are crafted over time and may include a synthesis of landscapes from various geographical locations and animals photographed in captivity or in the wild.

An albino deer is camouflaged in a lattice of trees, shadow and light in one image; in another, a weeping willow is enshrined in an apocalyptic fog. Three of Johan’s recent sculptures incorporating taxidermy, insects and foliage into miniature ecosystems will also be included in the show.

In his work, Johan blurs the boundaries between the real and the unreal, re-imagining worlds that, much like our own, are forever a mystery. Majestic animals in fantasy landscapes are set in relief against a darker reality, one of absence and longing. The work addresses primal experiences, shaped by desires and fears—solitary paths towards imagined fulfillment.

Simen Johan’s work is included in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Cleveland Art Museum. He recently received a grant from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation. In 2010–11, work from the series Until the Kingdom Comes will be presented in solo exhibitions at the Frist Center of Art in Nashville, TN and at the Pollock Gallery at SMU, Meadows School of the Arts in Dallas, TX. His work has been featured in solo museum exhibitions at the Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, Norway and the National Art Museum of Lithuania, and in group exhibitions at the George Eastman House, the International Center of Photography, the Australian Centre for Photography, the Neuberger Museum of Art and the University of Iowa Museum of Art. In 2003, Twin Palms published his monograph, Room to Play. Simen Johan was born in Kirkenes, Norway in 1973. He was raised in Sweden and has resided in New York City since 1992.

Jen Bekman Gallery is pleased to present Hey, Hot Shot! 2009 First Edition, an exhibition featuring eighteen works from five photographers: Michelle Arcila, Daniel Cheek, Mike Sinclair, Parsley Steinweiss and Kurt Tong.

The gallery will hold an opening reception on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The show will be on view Thursday, September 10 through Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Jen Bekman Gallery, 6 Spring Street, New York, New York.

With work ranging from conceptual to documentary, Hey, Hot Shot! 2009 First Edition presents the full diversity of contemporary photography. Daniel Cheek and Mike Sinclair establish diverging meditations on the American experience while working within rich landscape traditions. Michelle Arcila creates narratives both comforting and melancholy in their familiarity. Parsley Steinweiss’s photographs of stacks of books and magazines represent the type of post-photographic investigation vital to today’s art. And Kurt Tong’s celebrated work from China will be accompanied by a new project made in Labrador, one of the most isolated places in the world.

The photographers in this exhibition were selected from hundreds of submissions to Hey, Hot Shot!, the premier international photography competition. Twice a year, a distinguished panel of arts professionals chooses five artists for their unique contributions to photography and awards them with a group show at Jen Bekman Gallery. Since its inception five years ago, Hey, Hot Shot! has debuted over a hundred photographers, receiving critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Aperture, Art in America, PDN, and The Village Voice.

exhibition of photographer Jason Hanasik. Curated by Kris Graves.

“He Opened Up Somewhere Along The Eastern Shore” is a photography
project which engages image-making as a platform to intervene inside
Western culture’s traditions and expectations related to masculinity,
class, and heroism. This project opens up a space for a
counter-narrative to exist. This new narrative focuses on individual
experience, vulnerability, and intimacy as opposed to that which is
enforced by the State, an impenetrable unit of men.

“We, the men of these images and I, might not sit at an equal distance
from the center, but we all have a complicated relationship to what is
considered normal -- to our benefit and our destruction.”

Jason Hanasik was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1981. He received his MFA in Fine Arts with a focus in photography and video from California College of the Arts in 2009. Hanasik's work has been exhibited internationally and is represented by +Kris Graves Projects in Brooklyn, NY. He currently resides in San Francisco, CA.


In the project space, +Kris Graves Projects is pleased to present
Liz Jaff's newest series of works on paper entitled “Diagramming a Fold”
running simultaneous with Hanasik’s photography. The artist has created a sequence of 400 ink drawings that suggest motion using the format of film strips and photographic contact sheets. These works continue the artist’s investigations of ways of defining space through folding.

Liz Jaff lives and works in New York City.

Foley Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition of photographer Thomas Allen.

The title of Allen’s exhibition, Epilogue, reveals that Allen is ready to give us the final word. The artist is ready to retire his x-acto blade and bid farewell to the pulp fiction genre that he has so thoroughly cut-up and mined for the last seven years. Allen’s final foray finds the characters that he has so effectively brought to life entering reluctant tableaux that heralds their demise. Whether it is death, the end of love, a showdown or a last curtain call.

His unmistakable talent for creating the illusion of 3D with deft cuts and crimps allows us to see cowboy’s guns floating in mid air, spacemen taking their last gasp and an aerialist taking a death defying plunge. Inspired by the View-Master and “pop-up” books from childhood, Allen became interested in combining these viewing experiences with his adult interests in pulp fiction paperbacks as still life subjects.

In this new series of work, the narrative is reduced to the final scene, often the scene of the crime. How and why these characters have come together in their drama is up to us to decide.

Thomas Allen was born in Highland Park, MI in 1963. After nearly completing a degree in Criminal Justice at Wayne State University (Detroit), he decided to take some art classes. This raised him out of academic misery and helped move his floundering GPA off the Wanted List and onto the Dean's List! After changing his major to art in 1986, Tom spent the second half of his 10 year college career going to school part-time while working full-time for Toys 'R' Us to support himself. He received his BFA in 1991 and went on to earn his MFA form the University of Minnesota in 1996. Tom's exhibition record lists galleries throughout the United States and boasts two solo museum exhibitions at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in Michigan and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Milwaukee Art Museum; Target Corporation; Fidelity Investments and The Progressive Corporation. Publication credits include Harper's, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and O Magazine among many others. In 2007, Aperture Foundation [NY] published UNCOVERED: Photographs by Thomas Allen with a forward by graphic design superstar Chip Kidd.

An exhibition of photographs by Bryan Graf

The Wild Project is pleased to present Wildlife Analysis, the first solo exhibition of photographs by Bryan Graf. His atmospheric landscapes explore the spaces between description and invention, representation and abstraction.

In his photographs, Graf draws on the unexpected details of the natural environment surrounding New Jersey’s post- industrial landscapes. Black and white images of dandelions, crab grass and butterflies serve as a foundation for the work. When printing in the darkroom Graf adds an additional layer of fogged color film. The results, much of which are left to chance, give way to arresting and hallucinatory imagery.

Accumulation plays an important role in Graf’s photographs. Influenced by the landscape paintings of Gustave Courbet and Peter Doig, he re-visits one image or one place, allowing the cumulative experience to take control of the work. Whether the modification is of a small detail, the use of color or cropping, the repetitious nature of the images lead the viewer through his elusive wanderings.

Bryan Graf was born in New Jersey in 1982. He received his BFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University in 2005 and received his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2008. His work has been included in several group exhibitions and in Blind Spot Magazine.

The Wild Project is an environmentally conscious venue for contemporary theater, film and visual arts and is dedicated to supporting the arts by offering space and resources to emerging artists.

Deitch Projects is pleased to present Black Light, an exhibition of photographs by Kehinde Wiley that thrusts the black male image, captured by means of light manipulation and digital technology, into focus. This shuffle of Wiley’s artistic process reveals an integral component of his studio practice rarely seen while remaining, uniquely, Kehinde Wiley portraiture.

Enlisting the technical tenor of Hype Williams’ hip-hop videos from the 90’s, Wiley saturates his consummately styled subjects of Fulton Street Mall pedigree— caps flipped backward, wearing gear of New York legend— in “super rapturous light”. To transcendental and beatific effect, such illumination proffers a new measure of Wiley’s technical abilities, so that the medium of photography propels each figure to the point before paint consumes canvas— the moment when flesh, at its three dimensional, truth-telling, reveals scars long ago enacted. Browned fingernails, questioning red-glazed eyes and voluptuously glossed, cigarette-charred lips heighten what, for some, is no longer visible: a vulnerable microcosm of our metropolis— a black light. Through the 17 photographs on display, Wiley produces an intimate study of embattled psychologies whose adherents are at once flawed and majestic, canonized and misunderstood.

The exhibition Black Light will be accompanied by, Black Light, a full-color book published by Powerhouse and will be available at Deitch Projects.

FAMILY MATTERS-Tim Roda @ Dan Cooney Fine Art Gallery 9/10/09

Here is one good show opening September 10, 2009 that you should not miss!

Tim Roda's work is so unique in so many ways!

I had the privilege of a show preview last week and found the Family Matters body of work series very refreshing, interesting and quite well executed by a self taught photographer. His incorporation and creative set designs, art installations, usage of props and father and son photography collaboration makes the work fascinating to the eye.

Such family collaboration, reminded me the kind of photos of Paloma Picasso making drawings right next to Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali with his wife Gala. In my opinion, the Family Matters series, which is done in black and white has a very strong , sometimes dark, playful, intense quality reminiscent of the Spanish or Italian cinema where the intensity of family relations and interaction is portrayed with a lot of drama, rather voyeuristic and dark humor.

The quality of the photographs is raw and a bit grainy, which in this case work very well because, it adds a vintage quality but, it also can look very of the moment, like a good experiment. It also adds a great and comforting feeling of nostalgia. My favorite one (even though I liked the whole series is the one at top (Centaurus).

This show folks it is a must see. It will remind most of us , when little if you , used to play with your dad. To me it is one of the most precious memories . The photograph's sizes are a good ones , the editions are small and the price is extremely affordable. Kudos to Dan Cooney for such a good and interesting find. Thanks for letting me preview the work.

Family Matters Exhibition Dates: September 10 – October 31



We are proud to announce the gallery’s first exhibition of photographs by Tim Roda, titled Family Matters. The photographs that culminate in this exhibition examine the relationship between Roda and his son, Ethan. Furthermore, they are metaphorical memories of Roda’s childhood, family history and his relationship with his own father.

The scenes are played out in various studios and locations from Montana, Washington State, New York and Italy. Roda, whose formal training is in Ceramics, makes all of the stage settings for the work. The material used is disposable or reusable, mostly clay, cardboard, gaffer’s tape and other found material. The resulting photographs elaborate the artist’s approach and are presented as objects that the artists declares are “perfect in my mind”. The formal presentation displays rough edges, irregular margins and haphazard tonal range that reflect the quality of the stages.

The images reflect the struggles and joy between father and son. In one image the artist and his young collaborator are dressed in found and home made feminine attire gently touching each other fingertips in front of classic Italian statues. That playful and gentle moment contrasts another image where the son portrays an angry screaming gladiator dragging his father, face to pavement, across a cobblestone street by his handcuffed wrists.

Roda has exhibited internationally in many solo gallery and museum exhibitions. He was a 2008 - 09 recipient of the Fullbright Award to Italy. The artist and his son will be speaking on their collaboration at the gallery October 17th at 3:00.
