Runways, shot at the height of the punishing desert sun, shows young girls just before beginning their mandatory conscription into the Israeli Army. They engage with the otherwise forbidding runways – frolicking, standing, staring. The series examines the consequences of circumstance, when fate can be decided with the same severity with which the scorched skid marks funnel viewers to an unseen, unknown horizon.

I really liked this series . Love the sense of perspective creaed on the runway and almost looks like the subjects are about to take off and fly away. Great color pallettes, composition and integration with the landscape. Go and see it!

There is also another  series on display called the Sleepers .

Sleepers captures adolescent boys and girls at their most vulnerable: asleep at night in their beds. Both series speak of a momentary limbo between zones, between consciousness and between the milestones of young life. 

Lovely and endearing portraits of youth while sleeping.

Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Black Eye, Michal Chelbin's second solo exhibition with the Gallery on September 28, 2010. Reception and book signing with the artist will be held on October 14th from 6 to 8 pm. Andrea Meislin Gallery exhibited Chelbin's previous body of work, Strangely Familiar, in September 2008 to great critical and commercial success. The Black Eye continues her exploration of the world of athletes and performers from across Russia and Ukraine. Published as a monograph by Twin Palms, The Black Eye also features an original short story by Tel Aviv-based filmmaker and fiction writer, Etgar Keret. 

The athletes and wrestlers in this series are studies in contrasts: youth and manhood, strength and weakness, tenderness and rigidity, odd and ordinary, splendor and roughness. Revealing little about the lives of the subjects, Chelbin exposes an internal drama, capturing a tension between the gaze and the presence of each individual. These athletes are exhausted after a hard training session or fight. Some are breathless, sweaty, and fatigued. Chelbin unearths a certain expression in which they have almost calmed their breath but not yet fully regained their self-awareness. It is a moment when they have lifted their mask and surrendered to the camera. In exposing this moment, she opens up the contradiction between the person and the persona. 


Chelbin eschews digital processing and all of her photographs are printed by hand. As a result, these intensely hued photographs both authentically record their subjects and are striking to behold. 

Israeli-born artist Michal Chelbin has previously appeared in solo shows at Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel. Her work has been short-listed for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Competition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Chelbin is included in many prestigious private and public collections including The Jewish Museum, New York, The Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, The Kadist Art Foundation, Paris, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, The Portland Art Museum and The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel.

Artmostfierce recommends paying a visit to the Andrea Meislin Gallery at 526 West 26th Street in Chelsea and check out' Strangely Familiar' solo show from the gifted photographer Michal Chelbin.


The show titled Strangely Familiar includes photographs taken in Ukraine, Russia, England and Israel for the past five years.Chelbin's are mostly circus performers and eccentrics from society's fringes; after forming a connection with them , she photographs them.


This show has extremely gorgeous photographs, not only in content, composition and theme . There is something familiar about them and makes you wonder and inquire about the characters in front of the camera, individuals who are mostly children .You wonder what their past, present and future will be like. There is a sense of early maturity, wisdom and sadness that are captured with such sensibility and beauty.


The color photographs are rich in color hues and contrast between form, figure and composition. In some cases like Alicia , Ukraine , the colors, the position of the models enhance even more the suggested perspective that makes your eye ride along with it even though you are not in the car or in the photograph for that matter.This one along with the other ones shown here were my favorite's ones.


The black and white photographs are just as stunning as the color ones but, they have an ethereal vintage quality and are reminiscent of a beautiful photo album that some of our grandmother's will show with pride. They also have a portraiture quality reminds me of the work of one of the greatest photographers of all time ; Diane Arbus.


In addition there is the book with the same title published by Aperture Foundation which I highly recommend and a limited edition print for sale (see another previous posting) that it is a must have. They are selling fast so if you can't afford the show photos, hurry and get the Aperture print.

The work is not only beautiful but, also a great investment!
