The masters being recognized at the 8th Annual Lucie Awards include: This year the Lucie Awards recognize master photographers and organizations that have made a significant contribution to photography.  The list of honorees includes Tina Barney (Achievement in Portraiture Award),Howard Bingham (Achievement in Photojournalism), James Drake (Achievement in Sports),Graciela Iturbide (Achievement in Fine Art), Lee Tanner (Achievement in Documentary Photography Award), The Center for Photography at Woodstock will receive The Spotlight Award and The Eddie Adams Workshop will be presented with The Visionary Award. Composer and Artist Michael Nyman is the inaugural recipient of the Double Exposure Award – a new award that celebrates individuals who have achieved success in a number of fields, including photography.David Goldblatt will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.  The 2010 International Photography Awards (IPA) Finalists will also compete to receive cash prizes and Lucies.  Each year, Honorees are nominated by the 40 member Advisory Board. The Lucies will also recognize those in the creative community who are integral in crafting an image in the following categories:  Print Advertising Campaign of the Year, Fashion Layout of the Year, Photography Magazine of the Year, Book Publisher of the Year, Exhibition/Curator of the Year and Picture Editor of the Year.  The IPA competition will announce its top winners from the 2009 competition and distribute $20,000 in cash prizes across the top three awards.  IPA prizes include $10,000 for the International Photographer of the Year Award provided by AtEdge, $5,000 prize to the Discovery of the Year Award, and $5,000 to the Deeper Perspective Photographer of the Year.   Since its formation in October, 2008, the Lucie Foundation, supported by its membership,  has produced myriad events including: MOPLA (Month of Photography, Los Angeles) including exhibitions, workshops, lectures and outdoor photography projections, Lucie Scholarship and Mentoring programs, Fresh Look and Fresh Fair.     The Lucie Awards official media partner is Photo District News.  Additional support is provided by AtEdge, Runway Magazine, L2 Fine Art Mounting and Framing, Sous les Etoiles, and Splashlight Studios. "Paul Strand In Mexico" Comes to Chelsea Gallery

A new photography exhibit in Chelsea takes a look at the people of Mexico in the early 1930s in the years after its revolution. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

The harsh reality of Mexican life in the years after its revolution in 1910 are now on display in a new photo exhibit at Aperture gallery on West 27th Street. To chronicle this unique moment in Mexican history, premiere Mexican composer Carlos Chavez invited New York photographer Paul Strand to come with his camera.

"Paul Strand spent two, almost three years there really getting into what it meant to be sort of in this new nation and presented a great look at the people, the architecture, and the things they valued, the details, the religious details of that time," said Paul Strand in Mexico Editor Lesley Martin.

The exhibit includes more than 100 prints from Strand's time in Mexico in the early 1930s, plus a film he made as well.

A group of students from Baruch College who recently visited the exhibit say the beauty of the photographs are in the eye of the beholder.

"His sense of photographing people and the way he used light and texture, I've always found to be really remarkable," said Baruch College Professor of Photography Leonard Sussman.

"You see what's kind of like what in our culture might be, like a doe-eyed female girl, and even so, like even in that innocence, there's like a tension behind it, so that's what caught my eye," said Baruch College student Dov Zamore.

"A lot of the images, the ones not of the people, but of the religious icons, were more striking than the people themselves. Because a lot of the crucifixes, you could actually, they were so vividly made, that you could see the blood dripping from Jesus or the look, expression on his face and I found that particulary interesting," said Baruch College student Ravendra Persaud.

If you find Strand particularly interesting, you can see every image he took in Mexico in a new book titled "Paul Strand in Mexico." It goes on sale at bookstores next month, but is available now at Aperture. There is also a small showcase of his prints currently at the Bronx Museum of the Arts.

"We wanted this to be sort of a community wide celebration, both of Paul Strand but also of the incredible dynamic cultural exchange that's existed between Mexico and the United States," Martin said.

Today during the Second Session of Fall Portfolio Reviews NYC, I had the pleasure of looking at the work of photographer Christopher Paquette. Among the images there was one called Goodwill that always liked and stayed on my head since Christopher posted it a while back on Facebook. The minute I saw it ,  loved it!

So today,  after I had a face to face encounter with Goodwill and Christopher out of his kindness and goodwill gave me the image as a present. Needless to say this made my day! It was a very busy, but very productive day with great variety of talented photographers work to look at.

Thank you  so much Christopher!. Today with your generous gesture you reminded me why, I love photography and how lucky I am of doing what I do! 

I love it! Looking already for a frame for it and a very happy and great addition for my art collection. It is going up!

Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of The Black Eye, Michal Chelbin's second solo exhibition with the Gallery on September 28, 2010. Reception and book signing with the artist will be held on October 14th from 6 to 8 pm. Andrea Meislin Gallery exhibited Chelbin's previous body of work, Strangely Familiar, in September 2008 to great critical and commercial success. The Black Eye continues her exploration of the world of athletes and performers from across Russia and Ukraine. Published as a monograph by Twin Palms, The Black Eye also features an original short story by Tel Aviv-based filmmaker and fiction writer, Etgar Keret. 

The athletes and wrestlers in this series are studies in contrasts: youth and manhood, strength and weakness, tenderness and rigidity, odd and ordinary, splendor and roughness. Revealing little about the lives of the subjects, Chelbin exposes an internal drama, capturing a tension between the gaze and the presence of each individual. These athletes are exhausted after a hard training session or fight. Some are breathless, sweaty, and fatigued. Chelbin unearths a certain expression in which they have almost calmed their breath but not yet fully regained their self-awareness. It is a moment when they have lifted their mask and surrendered to the camera. In exposing this moment, she opens up the contradiction between the person and the persona. 


Chelbin eschews digital processing and all of her photographs are printed by hand. As a result, these intensely hued photographs both authentically record their subjects and are striking to behold. 

Israeli-born artist Michal Chelbin has previously appeared in solo shows at Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel. Her work has been short-listed for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Competition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Chelbin is included in many prestigious private and public collections including The Jewish Museum, New York, The Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, The Kadist Art Foundation, Paris, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, The Portland Art Museum and The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel.

This focused mid-career survey presents a selection of Fred Tomaselli’s unique hybrid paintings and collages from 1990 to the present. These layered paintings combine cutout images of plants, birds, smiling mouths, and hands (clipped from field guides and magazines) with passages of paint and actual prescription pills and hallucinogenic plants to create highly stylized, eye-popping compositions. Tomaselli’s artwork draws upon a wide range of sources from both popular culture and art history, and from his own hobbies of gardening, kayaking, and bird-watching. Growing up near the desert in southern California, Tomaselli felt the influence of nearby theme parks, with their manufactured reality, and the music and drug counterculture of Los Angles in the 1970s and 1980s. His distinctive melding of these influences coalesces into a folk-driven, utopian vision of the mythic American West and of lush gardens as sites of contemplation, loss, and possible redemption. One of the pioneering artists who moved to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the 1980s, Tomaselli continues to live and work in the borough.


This exhibition is organized and toured by the Aspen Art Museum and The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College. The Brooklyn Museum presentation is coordinated by Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum.

The long awaited publication of Paul Strand in Mexico brings together photographs and documents never before published from a pivotal time is this seminal artist’s career. On the occasion of the release of this comprehensive volume and exhibition on view now, Aperture in association with The John B. Hurford ‘60 Humanities Center at Haverford College has organized a two day symposium curated by scholar James Krippner, to take place at Aperture along with screenings of Strand’s films Manhatta & Redes taking place at the Cantor Film Center, NYU. This series of panels features prominent scholars and practitioners from the field discussing art historical context for this body of work by Strand from a number of perspectives.
