Zoe Strauss Last I-95 A 10 Year Labor of Love

Zoe Strauss- Cadmen NJ (Cadmen Crack)
This is one of my favorites images from Zoe Strauss work. One of the things that, I admire the most is that I know that , will never will have the guts to take a photograph like this even if, I see this scenario on a daily basis . I know it is hard to look at but, that is exactly why, I find it so amazing and will like to own it someday. This type of photos make you think about life in America, society and how we chose to ignore others. You can put in front of me the prettiest landscape and, still will chose this photo 10 times over.

I am writing about this now two weeks in advance because, you should make plans to visit the City Of Brotherly Love and see Zoe Strauss 10 year I-95 project installation . This is the last year folks so, get on it!

The Chinese Bus will get you to Philadelphia in 1 1/2 hours faster that you can get to DUMBO from Manhattan on a weekend.
At only $10.00 ride each way ...worth the trip for day trippers.

During the past 10 years, Zoe had worked very hard every year to bring ART to the public for free. This is a gallery artist whose work over the past 10 years had gained tremendous recognition among other things including being part of the Whitney Biennial.

I don't think, I know any other artist which such commitment to make art available to the public in such manner.Zoe you are very unique and very very special.

Needless to say, I will be there will ringing bells to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of such an ambitious , selfless, amazing celebration! No matter how busy I will be by then putting a show together ...I am there!

Congratulations Zoe !
See you all in Philly May 2, 2010.

Big love,
Ruben

Zoe Strauss-Nina, 2002

Please help Photographer, VERSUS artist and dear friend Zoe Strauss complete her dream and have a fantastic i-95 2010 blowout. This the last year of the 10 year i-95 exhibit. In order to raise funds for it, Zoe is having a great limited EDITION (yes big because Zoe, barely NEVER editions her work) of only 5 per photo image. I had atttended several of her i-95 yearly exhibits and all I can say that, I had never met somebody with such passion and commitment to the arts and her community.

Here is more info about the sale in Zoe's words. And yes the image shown above is to me a Zoe Strauss classic. Remember only edition of 5...

Get ready to get some of the "Countdown Dated Edition Photos." The Countdown Dated Edition Photos" are a series of photos including a photo from each year spanning the duration of the I-95 project, 2000 to 2010. The sale of these photos will help pay for the 2010 I-95 show. And, believe me, the 2010 show will be spectacular. Rest assured that if you get one, it's money well spent.

Starting this month, I will be posting the photos for sale at random times and they will be available until May 2010 or until they sell out. The photos are 250 bucks a pop, and will be made in a dated edition of 5. Photos will be offered in chronological order...
Image size for each photo is 7.5"x9.5", paper size is 8.5."x11", and the photos are archival ink-jet prints.

These are a limited edition 2009/2010 issue...they will be signed as such and come with a letter from me. This means that I am only printing 5 of these photos at 7.5" by 9.5" between right now and May 2010. Who knows what I'll print in 2010, but these are it from this year. The model and the Artist!

Here is the model on the photo. This is the very first time he has seeing and known about it.

Here I am...The Kellie Harper photo is going one way ticket back to Manhattan with me!

So ...so glad!
I visited Philly today. Photographer, Zoe Strauss really knows how to make people right at home.
The I-95 -09 show regardless of the weather conditions (it was raining a little) was great and  it never rained underneath  the  I-95 , where Zoe and her photographic work shined all day!

From the welcoming pretzels, water and a big hug from Zoe's mom, I felt right at home and eager to see the whole show. The new Alaska photographs series are quite beautiful and if I am not mistaken, the first place they are shown ( lucky the ones who got and bought those) .

Everybody was in great spirits and people from all walks of life and ages were curiously staring and contemplating the range and thematic variety that Zoe brings to her shows.

I think that finally!!!, the local Philadelphian's are finally realizing the jewel of talent that Zoe truly is.

Even the local newspapers are taking notice about the I-95 exhibit and Zoe . I can predict you that next year the final of the project , will be a pretty serious one and that here is a lot more good things coming out of  Zoe ''La Divina''Strauss the name  she is known to most of art collectors and friends .

For the driven out of towners like me that get what Zoe is all about. the journey is always refreshing and quite rewarding!

I was so happy to see several New York photographers like Amy Elkins, Clayton Cotorrel, Amy Stein , Dina Cantor, Timothy Briner, Ofer Wolfberger and the  local ones like Chad States and Justin Reed be present for the event to provide support and  to celebrate.

Me being me...a driven and determined one ...I zeroed in the Kelly Harper photograph. Zoe knew it from the get go. So after I saw the whole show, and thought of how many I liked and would like. very calmly parked myself right next to Kelly Harper photo and did not move till after 4:00 PM when the photos came down . More some day about The story of Kelly Harper.

People were just fascinated and kept asking me why that particular photo and all I said was ...some things are meant to be and this photo is meant to come back to NYC with me. The true meaning of art collecting is to find works that speak to you and that fit right in with your collection. This photo does it for me and more.

All, I can say from me and all of us is THANK YOU ZOE!...LOVE YOU!!!!!!!

Sunday May 3, 2009 Zoe Strauss I-95 Show Philadelphia

Photo-Zoe Strauss- Kelly Harper

ARTmostfierce is not missing this one!

And if you have the time ...you should get out of town and go to Philadelphia, The City of Brotherly Love to provide support and see  this show. Over the last nine years, with such  tremendous effort and dedication,  Photographer Zoe Strauss has pieced together this incredible and ambitious outdoor exhibit in an effort to share her photographic labor of love with the public in one of the most democratic settings possible; underneath the I-95 Highway in the city of Philadelphia.

In my opinion this is something that is not done enough here in NYC (maybe because we are too greedy) and that artists should take notice and try to incorporate into their ME, ME and more ME agenda.

Originally the photo exhibit was in tented to demonstrate the surroundings of the highway area but, as Zoe's emerging career progressed, so it is the exhibit, covering territories as far as Alaska, making it a demonstration of America.

Speaking of America, Zoe's book will be available for purchase at different locations in Philadelphia and Zoe will be signing copies. You can purchase America at in Philadelphia at any of these locations:

The Joseph Fox Bookshop
1724 Sansom Street

Bindlestiff Books
4530 Baltimore Ave

Penn Book Center
130 S. 34th Street

All Indiebound booksellers.

In  times of Economic hardship like now , it is refreshing to see that some artists like Zoe are still committed to make her art visually and accessible to the public.

The show is part of a benefit for the Philadelphia Arts Project which our dear Zoe founded and is the Executive Director. They will a sale of color copies to benefit the PAP.

By The Way... in case you don't know or remember last year, I took the Chinese Bus for $10.00 each way  and the trip was quick and efficient. If anybody wants to travel there by bus...don't be scared ...and if you need somebody to hold your hand to get out of Manhattan for a few hours feel free to contact me to meet up and travel together. I can be crazy sometimes but, a lot of fun!

See you Sunday and don't miss it. It is worth the trip!
