Last night after a great opening reception at Sara Tecchia Roma New York Gallery , a great group show with amazing new works from Christa Parravani and Sebastian Denz among the several artists featured in the show(a must see and must own). Then off to the Lower East Side to see Slava Mogutin's Food Chain ( very interesting curated show) and after some tasty dumplings at Vanessa's ( we love high and low!) me and Kris Graves from + Kris Graves Projects Gallery, went to la casa di Sara Tecchia for the Fall Forward reception...and a real fiesta it was!

Great crowd , great food oh...and great Bellini's that are still spinning in my head. Sara is always the perfect host and television crews and camera's were catching every single moment on film. A true and real Sex and the City night for me and all who attended. Then again Sara, is the real deal ...Gracie Sara...Bravissimo!

September 24, 2009 – Nov 7, 2009
Reception: Thursday, September 24, 6–8pm

Sara Tecchia Roma New York is excited to kick off the fall season with Fall Forward, a group show featuring painting, photography, and sculpture by the gallery's artists. The exhibit opens September 24th and will run through November 7th. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, September 24th from 6 – 8 pm.

During these past summer months, our artists have been hard at work taking part in or preparing for various shows and projects in both the US and Europe. Here's a sneak preview with more to come. Christa Parravani is currently part of A River Runs Through Me a group show featuring the photography of Alec Soth, Barbara Bosworth and Elijah Gowin curated by Ariel Shanberg, at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, MA. On September 26 photographer Corey Arnold will be featured in, NOW: Art of the 21st Century, at the Philips de Pury and Co., Group Auction in London, England. Photographer Sebastian Denz's awaited monograph Skateboarding.3D published by Prestel Verlag will be released in Europe on September 14th and in the US in October (date TBA). Mixed media artist, Ludovica Gioscia has two upcoming solo exhibitions: Mikado at the Siobhan Davies Dance Studios in London, England, and Beheaded Monarchs at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show opens on Ocotber 17th. Painter Duston Spear is part of Twenty Year Invitational and Benefit at The Contemporary Art Gallery at Scared Heart University New Fairfield, CT.

As we near the season of harvest, we have asked our artists to gather in New York and indulge us with a preview of the fruits of their labor. Fall Forward offers the opportunity to come together at the gallery and participate in a discourse on the artists' individual progress as well as celebrate the arrival of a new art season.

SARA TECCHIA ROMA NEW YORK is located at 529 West 20th Street, between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue. The gallery is on the second floor. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm. For more information, contact 212-741-2900, or visit www.saratecchia.com

SCOPE Art Fair Hightlight

Sebastian Denz
SCENE 3, Gabriel Engelke (Switch Ollie)
Lightjet C-Print
Marseille, 2006
96 x 48 inches Ed. 2/3 $9500 (unframed)
71 x 35 inches Ed. 5/5 $9000 (plus frame)

ARTmostfierce liked this innovative piece by Sebastian Denz and it was selling like hot cakes at Sara Tecchia Gallery NY, SCOPE Art Fair.Check it out !
It is a very interesting process and great visual effect. Please read below more info about it.

Sebastian Denz traveled for almost three years across Europe to shoot a series of 3D Photographs with Carhartt/Europe's team of professional skateboarders. The result of his work is a series of 3D skate photographs in a quality never seen before. Inspired by the virtual world of videogames Denz seeks to: "Bring up for discussion a hybrid space that is somewhere in between virtual and real - a 'Postvirtual Space'. Therefore I took photographs of more than 20 Carhartt/Europe-Team-Skaters with a unique large-format-3D-camera (8 x 10 inches), which has been built especially for this project and took 2 years to produce. The exhibition shows some of them in the 'real hyper-reality' of life-sized high resolution 3D-images."

With his project SKATEBOARDING.3D, Sebastian Denz won the 20th International BFF (German Association of Freelance Photographers) Promotion Award 2008. The work was also presented at the Visual Gallery at Photokina this past September 2008 during the International Photography Fair Photokina in Cologne, Germany. The book SKATEBOARDING.3D will be published in 2009 by Sebastian Denz and Carhartt under Prestel Publishing.

The Current State of the ART Market Series # 10- Sara Tecchia- Gallerista & Owner of Sara Tecchia Roma NY Gallery

This is installment #10 of The Current State of the ART Market Series. This one is going to my fabulous, glamorous and knowledgeable red hair friend and Gallerista, Sara Tecchia owner of Sara Tecchia Roma NY Gallery . Sara is not only a great gallerist but also, a perfect hostess @ her home. With the opening of Corey Arnold show @ her gallery February 26, 2009, ARTmostfierce wanted to catch up with Sara . Lets see what Sara is sharing with us!

Photos- Sara Tecchia Roma Gallery NY

Ruben Natal-San Miguel- Please tell us how such a fabulous glamour girl like you got into the art business? How long ago? What triggered it?

Sara Tecchia-I'm a very independent thinker/workaholic and needed to find a profession that would cater to these needs. In 2003 I graduated with honors in Political Science, International Affairs at La Terza Universita' di Roma and was at a crossroads. What to do? I didn't have a particular talent or disposition towards anything in particular. I had studied photography during college and some of my work had been exhibited. I thought: "Great, I'll move to NY, pursue graduate studies in Contemporary Art and take it from there" and this I did, at Christie's NY. I was very naive and uneducated in the matter. Thus, after confronting myself with those who set the paradigms of contemporary art I quickly realized that creating art wasn't my talent while finding, promoting and fostering the careers of emerging and mid career artists was a more realistic possibility. Thus, I opened Sara Tecchia Roma New York on September 15, 2005.

RNSM- I always admired your knowledge , professionalism and charm...I mean you are a great hostess @ home also... something that some art dealers can lack @ times...Is it hard to be so composed at all times?

ST-I've never been defined as composed: I like it. I believe that it all comes down to extreme organization and attention to detail, planning ahead of time. I never do things last minute. I notice everything and try to troubleshoot in my mind before problems occur so I know what to expect. As for entertaining I enjoy bringing people together and think of the salons led by the likes of Madame de Staël and Gertrude Stein. When people gather and are comfortable the conversations that generate lead to ideas - ideas to enthusiasm - enthusiasm to action.

RNSN- How do you come about choosing your artists for your gallery?

ST-There isn't an established method. Every time is different: introductions, artist submissions. You never know when or where it will happen. That's the beauty of my profession.

RNSM- Photojournalist Corey Arnold, is part of the stable of your gallery...how did you find him? I mean he is very popular. Please explain. Tell us a bit about Corey.

CoreyArnold_Chris_and_Little_Kitty_2004

ST-I first encountered Corey through an image that had nothing to do with his Fish-Work photography: a hefty man laying on a bed with an equally, if not more, hefty cat. I was curious, explored his website and discovered his life/life-style and was captivated by his courage and aesthetics. Corey shows a side of the sea that is unfamiliar to most of us. His images elude the stereotypical narrative of the sea. Otherwise I would have not been attracted to the work. There's a sublime quality to the imagery along with undeniable beauty.

RNSM- Corey Arnold is your next show at Sara Tecchia Roma New York gallery. Why now ?

ST-Although the show was planned one year ago it's the right moment: with times being so dire people need to remember the beauty of their natural surroundings however distant and unapproachable they may seem.

RNSM- What do you think about the current economic market now and its effects on the ART world? and Are you taking any kind of measurements or plan of action to weather this climate?

ST-Everybody is experiencing different types of issues in connection with the current crisis, dependent upon on the amount of years in the business and personal experience. There is an ongoing correction and this is not a bad thing. Not everybody is gifted with the rare talent that allows one to be an artist on a professional level and the same applies to art dealers, not everybody possesses the necessary business savvy. Too many galleries have opened in recent years without a strong overall vision. For a gallery to have a possibility of success it's not enough to have a few artists and wall space. There must be a reason. The vision is the reason and is the driving force when times are tough. The program is my main focus and the program is made by a group that must remain strong and confident and not by one or two artists. I avoid reading about all the bad. It's depressing and doesn't help. I keep a very strong focus on what I'm doing, allow few factors to influence my path and work more now than I've ever done. Times are slow for everybody, it's a common status but the great news is that the curve will eventually turn. Hopefully during this "sabbatical" artists, curators, critics and dealers will stop to ponder, bond and innovation will arise.

RNSM- You currently did an art fair in Bologna, Italy...,Can you tell us your experience? Good? Bad?

ST-Bologna was a surprise. It was my first venture in my homeland and we were greeted with open arms. Sales were strong and consistent. I realized that attitudes and personal situations aren't universal. Trust is a big factor where sales are concerned.

RNSM- Now in March 09 , you are also @ SCOPE NY in Lincoln Center ... Can please tell us what are you showcasing? Any additional thoughts?

ST- At Scope-New York I'm showcasing new oil paintings by Paul Jacobsen, large scale 3D photographs by Sebastian Denz, Robert Brinker's cut-paper drawings and David Fried's sound activated sculptures. I feel confident and look forward to a fun week. I truly enjoy meeting new artists, curators, collectors and reconnecting with those I haven't seen in a while. Right now it's important to not nurture high expectations. Whatever comes I take as unexpected surprise and a small victory.

RNSM- How you develop a collectors base? What steps do you take to keep a collectors base even at challenging times like now?

ST-When I opened the gallery I was absolutely unknown and didn't have any connections. Thus, I focused on marketing and branding. I did a lot of advertising, which involved listing the name of the four artists I was then showing and listing my cell phone number. The first art fair I did was Scope Hamptons nine months after opening the space, which allowed me to meet collectors that soon after became clients. Since then I had many fortunate chance encounters with seasoned collectors who share my taste and appreciated/appreciate the facts that my artists are very active, have strong resumes, and fair prices. The most important thing to me is to be just towards all parties involved. I'm not interested in the one time sale. It would have been easy to inflate prices from the get go but I knew that in the long run it would have worked against me. Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler stated that there was a strong reasoning that backed Picasso's prices. I work in the same manner. I seek true patrons who purchase art because they absolutely need to live with the piece of their choice and not because they get a rush out of closing the deal at a certain discount. I always wonder if collectors understand that a good chunk of the money from the sale goes towards paying the printer, framer, shipper, buying supplies, studio rent, insurance etc. It's a whole chain of people who benefit from the sale and keep their business afloat, not only the artist and dealer. If sales stop a very large group suffers. It's important that this be known and collectors understand that this is the time to pick a handful of galleries and help out as much as they possibly can. This is the sense of true patronage.

RNSM- What suggestions or ideas can you provide for a new artist seeking gallery representation now?

ST-Truth be told it's not a good time to seek gallery representation. Every time a gallery takes on a new artist it's a big financial risk that involves large expenses. My advice is focus on your work, don't think of the possible returns, wait.

RNSM- Any final thoughts Sara...tell us what is in your mind now?

ST- What's on my mind is to: stay positive, focus, try not to worry too much about the downturn as it's only temporary, enjoy life. My daily mantra that keeps me grounded is: "It's not supposed to be easy" and "Sara, you can do this".

RNSM-Thank you Sara! See you @ Corey Arnold's opening 2/26/09!

Happy New Year!!!!

ARTmostfierce end it up 2008 and started 2009 with one of the things he does best...party!

I am still hungover from last night. A party night it was! Had the pleasure to go to Sara Tecchia's New Years bash at her SoHo loft!

Thanks Sarah! You always have the best crowd and atmosphere!

It was a great sign to end up 2008 surrounded by great art and artists.

Had the pleasure of meeting and spend time with Jonathan Le Vine who represents Shepard Fairey and I really want to collect from more than just a signed poster!

Stopped by at Jeremy Kost Tribeca Grand party for a bit and then went my own way for a little adventure...

Champagne, mojitos, vodka and cranberry you name it went down my throat!

Needless to say everybody was my friend last night and, I was every body's friend.

Another year full of ideas , energy, new people and new adventures...Hell Yeah!

I am ready!

THE SAND,  THE LINE  and THE CONSEQUENCES
December 18,2008-January 31, 2009

Please read info about Karina Wisniewska
Born to Swiss-Polish parents in Venice, Karina Wisniewska began playing the piano at age five, going on to become a professional pianist and recording ten audio CDs. In 1997, she won the title Swiss Musician of the Year and was a celebrity within the classical music circuit but a freak accident interrupted her career as a professional musician.

Wisniewska's abstract quartz sand works combine music and painting to form a lively symbiosis. The paintings are sonorous; the spaces and lines of color - acrylic streaks enriched with natural or dyed quartz sand - are full of apparent fluidities, reflections and intangibilities. There is nothing concrete to identify, but neither are they governed by a chaotic juxtaposition of lines of force and color, or of geometric and magical vagaries. All is open and all, at the same time, seems structured. They are an order of chance and structure that creates a new reality of space and time. She describes her meticulous process by saying that she "work[s] by tying a small bottle with a mixture of acrylic and lacquer onto a brush so the paint flow never stops. I draw free hand without any rulers or compasses on the canvas. The difficulty is that the time to fill the drawings with quartz sand is very short. The liquid dries up very quickly and builds an impermeable surface. Thus, I need to draw, then stop, then fill it up with sand and be very careful with continuing with the other marks. The crossings are very, very difficult."

Wisniewska's work can be found in the UBS collection in Zurich, Switzerland, the Musee Abbatiale de Payerne and in many well known private collections. The paintings have also been presented at Art Basel Miami, Art Cologne, Scope Miami, Scope New York, Art Dubai and Art Shanghai among others.

See you @ the opening!

Ellis Gallagher takes over the sidewalks @ South Beach during Miami Art Basel

Here is Ellis Gallagher @ work!
Don't mind the photo, I was drinking between parties when I ran into him!

ARTmostfierce saw Ellis Gallagher work everywhere in South Beach. I mean, he was busy!
It was kind of great walking on Collins Avenue where a lot of the small satellite Art Fairs happened and during the night most of the parties took place, you always were able to see Ellis street graffiti even after having too many drinks!

It was not only a refreshing visual experience but , the graffiti art displayed mostly on the sidewalk, was a great transition statement between the art fairs with the parties. He is represented by Sara Tecchia Gallery in NYC. See more information below about Ellis.

EXHIBITION:

SPOON RIVER: New Photographs by Christa Parravani

DATES: November 6 - December 11, 2008
RECEPTION: Thursday, Nov 6, 6-8pm

Well, don't you see this was the way of it/ We bought the farm with what he inherited/And his brothers and sisters accused him of poisoning/His fathers mind against the rest of them/And we never had any peace with our treasure/The murrain took the cattle, and the crops failed/And lightning struck the granary/So we mortgaged the farm to keep going/And he grew silent and was worried all the time...Then the dreadfulest smells infested the rooms/So I set fire to the beds and the old witch-house/Went up in a roar of flame/As I danced in the yard with waving arms,/While he wept like a freezing steer.
- Edgar Lee Masters, Nancy Knapp, "Spoon River Anthology" (1915)

Sara Tecchia Roma New York is pleased to announce a solo-exhibition of new photographs by Christa Parravani. The body of work, Spoon River, is inspired by Edgar Lee Masters' "Spoon River Anthology," a collection of 244 poems told by the deceased residents of this fictional town describing the situations that led to their demise.

Parravani's work is heavily influenced by Diane Arbus, who sought to uplift an often downtrodden and socially outcast troupe of characters through photography. Parravani's work seeks a similar retribution as she is giving closure to each Spoon River denizen while investigating the psychology of death and trauma. Like Arbus, Parravani considers herself a straightforward pictorialist. She uses a 4x5 view camera and strongly avoids altering the works in any way. The photographs are taken near The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH. Founded in 1907, it is the oldest artist colony in America and the two years that Parravani spent there ingrained in her a sense of natural proportions. Each image has an uncomfortable and uncanny quality, the visual language of which suggests an event beyond the borders of the photograph.

Each scene is carefully planned but photographed en plein air with the spontaneity and the attention to landscape and portraiture attributed to symbolist painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage. In fact, the identity of each figure is accentuated by the presence of nature, either grand sweeping backdrops or claustrophobic close-ups of a forest interior. The landscape, behind each character, plays as important a role in the development of the photograph as does the back-story associated with each poem. To Parravani, the individual is a product of his or her environment, and thereby belongs, embossed for eternity, within it.

Parravani's photographs were featured in the PBS documentary, "The Four Seasons of MacDowell" screened at both MoMA, NY and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC. The work is in the permanent collections of the Woodstock Center for Photography and the Neiman Center for Print Studies, Bard College and has been showcased at Scope Miami, Scope New York, Photo New York, Photo San Francisco and Aqua Wynwood Miami.

SARA TECCHIA ROMA NEW YORK is located at 529 West 20th Street, between Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue. The gallery is on the second floor. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm or by appointment. For more information, contact 212-741-2900, info@saratecchia.com or visit www.saratecchia.com
