Artist Statement
UNDER THE SURFACE Water has the power to transform, to renew and to destroy. People around the world use water as a source of salvation and spiritual transformation, as a source of healing, cleansing, cooling and sustenance. Simultaneously, water has the power to extinguish life. It is this profound contradiction between healing and harm – freedom and entrapment that informs the content of these images. A transformation takes place as the photographic subject enters the water. The subject encounters weightlessness and calm yet is always under pressure to rise for breath. For the past four summers, my wife, daughter and I have traveled to Trinity Alps of Northern California to create these images in the main and south forks of the Trinity River. These figures are photographed using natural light in selected pools. Sediment levels in the rivers change depending on flow and location. Sediment alters the quality of light, and therefore the images.
