First Class/Second Class- Opening Tonight!

Brian Shumway
Giovonni, 24. Collingswood, NJ, 2009
Digital C-print
16" x 20"

Chris Verene, Rebecca Morgan, Miles Ladin, Devin Troy Strother, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, Holly Jarrett, Conor McGrady, and Brian Shumway.

Curated by Asya Geisberg and Leah Oates.

March  31- May 7, 2011

Holly Jarrett's sculpture "Pig's Palace" concentrates on the current state of British working class youth. Compelled by what she sees as the drift from national pride to abject self-hatred, Jarrett juxtaposes Henry VIII and Robert Pattinson, Matisse and childish stickers, as visual and cultural co-equals, creating a portrait of poverty of both the environment and the imagination.

Chris Verene's series of photographs charts the personal stories of his extended family living in a small economically depressed town in middle America. Shot over 26 years, "Family" creates a nuanced portrait of a community's survival amidst the absence of class mobility. Hopelessness is alternately evoked and thwarted. The exacting details of each image force a victory over circumstance.

Devin Troy Strother works with vividly colored cut paper, toying with racial stereotypes that have their roots in class-based assumptions. Using titles that play with expectations of propriety, Strother pokes fun at the art-world and world at large, creating uncomfortable and humorous juxtapositions.

Miles Ladin's black and white photographs of glamorous parties and social events attended by the rich and famous in New York City reveal the peculiar aspects of upper class reality. His subjects have self-marginalized and live apart from most of society. Stark lighting delineates the incongruity and acute awkwardness of this self-selected elite.

Rebecca Morgan hails from a Pennsylvania farm town, and resides in Brooklyn. Her paintings and cartoon-drawings depict the culture clash created by that migration. Animalistic and bizarre transformations evoke the stereotypes of uncouth and uncultured rural redneck Appalachia.

Conor McGrady grew up in Northern Ireland, where he was harassed daily by British police. His work addresses the occupation and subjugation of a community frequently living in prison-like housing complexes. McGrady creates iconographic symbols that capture moments of protest, anger, and disobedience, emanating from an underlying frustration at a lack of opportunities.

Brian Shumway's photographic series documents young women who hope to be models or actresses, acting out their fantasies of femininity and beauty. The women choose their outfits and environments, but the portraits show a subtle sense of vulnerability as the models peer out of the picture frame. Situated within limited urban environments, they aspire to something greater and outside the boundaries of race, class, and cultural notions of sexuality.

Ruben Natal-San Miguel's street photography documents people going about their daily rituals in Harlem, a neighborhood undergoing rapid gentrification. His images capture an uncontrived sense of freedom and the candid manner of his subjects, whose behavior, dress, and decorum disregards other class-based strictures.

"First Class/Second Class" features work that investigates various aspects of class structure via either a personal narrative or an outsider's perspective. The artists come from a range of backgrounds and cultures, and do not necessarily foreground the theme of class in their work. This exhibition extracts class as a necessary and frequently overlooked prism through which we can interpret their work. "First Class/Second Class" posits that class is omnipresent as an identity marker, and frequently undermines race, gender, and nationality, while simultaneously being dependent on individual circumstances. Works in the exhibition illustrate the tribal aspects of class, and show how it might be as confining or freeing as other aspects of cultural identity. "First Class/Second Class" presents a multiplicity of alternative views, in order to alter assumptions and to personalize the topic from each artist's perspective.

George Condo's Mental States: A Narrated Exhibition Walk Through (VIDEO)

Now on view at the New Museum is George Condo's Mental States. This "conceptual survey," as the artist considers it, spans two floors, featuring both paintings and sculptures Condo has created over the past 30 years. His style is eclectic and captivating; his strange portraits of imaginary characters embody themes of melancholia and various other mental states, all the while maintaining both a humorous and fantastical feel. While he may be recently known as the artist that made Kanye West's censored and controversial cover art for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, George Condo's paintings and sculptures embody much more. Watch the video below for a walk through of Mental State, narrated by Associate Curator Gary Carrion-Murayari.

ARTmostfierce Affordable Print Pick of the Week- Carrie Mae Weems @ Light Work

Carrie Mae Weems - Kitchen Table Series
Untitled, from the Kitchen Table Series, 1990/2010
Silver gelatin print, 9 7/8 x 9 3/4" image on a 14 x 11" sheet
Signed and numbered print in a limited edition of 100

ARTmostfierce Affordable Print Pick of the Week this week goes to the wonderful work of Carrie Mae Weems and one of my favorite secrets Light Work.

This print is beautiful and so worth the money. Her work was just on display at the Studio Museum of Harlem.

Carrie Mae Weems - Kitchen Table Series
$1,000.00

Here is more info:
The seminal Kitchen Table Series by Carrie Mae Weems is widely recognized as a masterpiece of performance and story-telling within the photographic image. In this series, Weems uses a subtle vocabulary of props, gesture, and gaze to frame complex questions about identity, gender construction, representation, parenthood, and the nature of human relationships. Weems describes her intention of Kitchen Table Series as a personal view on the world around her, "I endeavored to intertwine themes as I have found them in--racial, sexual, and cultural identity and history--and presented them with overtones of humor and sadness, loss and redemption." The nonlinear narrative and issues presented in Weems' Kitchen Table Series remain as topical and thought-provoking today as when the images were first created in the early 1990s. Rendered in exquisite black-and-white, this silver gelatin print is hand-printed by Griffin Editions in New York City.

"This black and white photo comes from Weems' "Kitchen Table Series" which portrayed Weems in various domestic scenes in which the artist performs various stories, creating a narrative about relationships, family, race, sex and society. The work is evocative, mysterious and dramatic. What more can one hope for in the art we live with?"
-- Jim Hedges, The Huffington Post

Artsicle offers customers artwork without a huge commitment | 7online.com

A New York web-based program makes it possible for indecisive art lovers to enjoy a variety of artwork without having to suffer from buyer's remorse.
Artsicle allows customers to choose a piece of artwork and rent it for a reasonable price of fifty dollars a month. If they like the artwork, they can purchase it for the full amount. If they do not, they can trade it in for something different or simply return it.
"I love the idea of try before you buy because I have a pretty novice eye," says customer Andrew Dumas.
The program gives customers like Andrew the opportunity to see how the artwork will mesh with their home décor or artwork that was previously purchased.
"I could keep that painting on my wall for six months or I could decide tomorrow that it's not the right size or didn't necessary love it and want to try something new and recycle as needed," he says.
Alexis Tryon and Scott Carleton are the founders of the new program and website.
"I had a woman who said she's been collecting for 30 years and this was a new way to discover new artists that didn't require as much door to door," says Alexis.
"We really wanted to make art more accessible to everyone and we found that people aren't just scared of buying art on line they're scared of buying art period," adds Scott.
The artists featured on Artsicle love the idea as much as the customers. Myles Bennett is one of thirty three artists who have their work on the website, which now has an inventory of more than five hundred pieces.
Bennett feels that the exposure his work has received is priceless, even having his art featured in galleries nationwide does not compare.
"I've already had 3 pieces go out within two weeks. It's just kind of amazing," he says.
"We're trying to make new collectors, I feel like it's the end goal," adds Alexis.
All the pieces are insured, you must sign a contract and they deliver piece to your home
Pieces vary from postcard size to 6 feet.
Works cost up to 5000 dollars, but most fall between 500 and 1500 dollars

Moveable Feast: Fresh Produce and the NYC Green Cart Program
Mar 22 through Jul 10

Moveable Feast: Fresh Produce and the NYC Green Cart Program
documents an innovative NYC Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene program that provides underserved communities with
access to fresh fruits and vegetables via hundreds of independently
owned, mobile produce stands known as Green Carts. The exhibition
features new photographs by LaToya Ruby Frazier, Thomas Holton,
Gabriele Stabile, Will Steacy, and Shen Wei, who were commissioned
by the Aperture Foundation to chronicle the initiative over the course
of a year.

The resulting photographs, in styles ranging from portraiture to
landscape to street photography, capture not only the carts themselves,
but also the stories of the vendors, customers, and their communities.
Moveable Feast invites consideration about the geography of food
options and its relationship to a community’s health.

Moveable Feast: Fresh Produce and the NYC Green Cart Program
was organized by the Museum of the City of New York in
collaboration with Aperture Foundation, a not-for-profit organization
devoted to photography and the visual arts.

Moveable Feast: Fresh Produce and the NYC Green Cart Program
is made possible with the generous support of the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.

Additional support has been provided by Kodak.

Adventures in Art Collecting- A True Story with a Happy Ending

After so many years of stashing away like a squirrel ( no, that is not my nickname, someone else we know)
I was looking around and decided that my art collection will be only photography and  the works related to this art media.

Out the door via auction , eBay, Craigslist  or whatever ( see my state of mind on blog header ) is necessary. will go all the works on Paper , mixed media, Multiples, Ephemera, limited edition signed posters and most of the painting as well.

I already sold a Jeff Koons puppy and made quite (very substantial ) a profit on it. Just a tip to new art collectors, bought it many years ago,  believed to be  2002-2003. Most of my friends thought that, I was abolutely insane for paying at that time close to $200.00 for it. They said you paid $200.00 for a ceramic plate (little they know), I said YES because:

 1- I liked it.

2-I thought it will become an iconic symbol of an art era.

3-Did not matter to me the fact that  it was an edition of 2,300.00 that at that time, you can simply buy it at the giftshop of the Mass MoCA.

4. My personal taste and eye tents to go the unusual and rare.

Here is an example how well this little balloon dog is doing:

Well, I was right my instict did not fail me and whenever you buy a piece of art, even though sometimes is important to hear what other say and think of it, YOU are the one making the final decision and YOU have to trust your gut. More than anything you need to love what you collect and buy. After nine lovely years of my little shinny Jeff Koons plate had adorned so greacefully in my living room, like a many of my relationships ...it is time to say ADIOS!

Trust me that little 10 inch square space is already filled up with a great photograph.

Ciao bello Puppy Balloon! You go on and make anothers home beautiful and happy!

If you own one ...take it out for a walk with no return and make some pretty good mula in return!
Very hot right now!

PS. Thanks for making me momentarly rich in the process...Muah!
