Michael Waug-Decline and Fall @ Schroeder Romero & Shredder 3/3/11

Michael Waugh, Detail of The Accumulation of Capital (from Luxemburg to Robinson), 2010

You need to go and see this masterpieces drawings in person. They are beautiful, labor intensive and a total feast to the eye.
See you there!

Here is more info about Michael Waugh:

Decline and Fall features large-scale drawings, video documentation of performance works and a new installation that exposes the act of reading as an act of accumulation-as old-fashioned and melancholy in a world dominated by sound-bytes and disposability. As with Waugh's previous multi-disciplinary shows, these disparate forms dovetail with each other through their use of language, text and prodigious amounts of labor. In each of the works on view, the hand of the artist and the personal time it records stands in absurd contrast to the vast ideas explored in the texts, namely the various iterations of cultural collapse.

Central to the exhibition are Waugh's intricate drawings based on his exploration of micrography, a 9th century Jewish calligraphic technique where tiny handwritten words coalesce into representational images-images which in Waugh's case range from portraits of turn of the century rowers, dogs of various breeds, and grand dynamic landscapes. Originally used to illuminate religious works, here Waugh uses secular texts such as Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and The Accumulation of Capital by Rosa Luxemburg to draw attention to how written language itself has become aestheticized and separated from everyday life. Waugh makes no attempt to summarize or interpret his source texts. By copying them word for word, or reading them verbatim in his performance works, he creates unashamedly monumental works grappling with large, sustained ideas, and his marathon-like labor can barely contain them.

Sandi Haber Fifield-Between Planting and Picking-3/3-4/16/11 @ Rick Webster Fine Art

Sandi Haber Fifield-Between Planting and Picking solo show opening March 3, 2011, is a good sign and indication that Winter is about to be over and Spring is right around the corner!

Sandi was so kind to send me a signed copy of  her  Between Planting and Picking monograph.

Her solo show will show selected images from a published monograph sharing the same title. The book, with is great imagery, makes me long for the upcoming spring with all its great greenery, earth, domestic and rural settings.

To me, living in such a Concrete Jungle as NYC can be, seeing all this wonderful lush, homey and sunny settings of this book reminded me and brought  me  such great memories  of my childhood while growing up at my Grandparents farm.

I am sure most us are longing for those wonderful sunny days of spring and summer. For now we will have Sandi Haber Fifield's Between Planting and Picking as a reminder of greater things to come... soon!

Don't miss this show and get the book!
See you at the opening!

To celebrate the end of winter and to anticipate spring, Rick Wester Fine Art will present an exhibition of recent color photographs by Sandi Haber Fifield, selected from her upcoming monograph, Between Planting and Picking (Charta, 2011). Beginning in June 2009 through the fall of 2010, Haber Fifield photographed family owned farms spanning New England to the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest. Teeming with the verdant and lush colors of these fertile fields, Haber Fifield made pictures that delicately balance the geographic with the geometric, while using the agricultural landscape to create a complex vocabulary of visual associations. Less documentary and more about her personal vision, she finds a metaphor in the unending cycle of growth and harvest for her own image-making.

"New York Sleeps": Christopher Thomas on the 'City That Never Sleeps' (VIDEO)

30 large-scale cityscapes, devoid of people: tranquil, cryptic. Elusive glimpses of 'the city that never sleeps' in a rare state of dormancy. "These photographs have a strong emotional aura, you have a very rich and sensual tonality and a very plastic quality that really changes our perception of architecture," the curator of the collection cuts into our hypnagogic trance.

And... more highlights -Portfolio Reviews 2/23/11 @ The American Society of Media Photo

The work of  photographer Zach Gross caught me eye last night. His photos possess a true contemporary feel, not committed yet to any type of work series, just wonderful individual photos that stand on its own. We had a conversation about this photo ( first one below) which Zach showed me in Black and White . I asked him if is was originally a color one. Well... here it is as you can see ...great!

Keep an eye on him and his work!

Sheri Lynn Behr-145 LA

Sheri Lynn Behr- No Safe Distance series is portraiture done in your face without permission Paparazzi style, in which YOU become the celebrity. Interesting commentary of how the celebrity culture of face and picture taken affects the most common individuals in society...us!

The result is very cool retro Polaroid 70's portraits with a very nice color palette, interesting facial emotions  and reactions.

Raymond Adams series Autopsy of a House is a great photo series that highlights the downturn of the American Economy reflected in housing and its aftermath.
All Photos -Raymond Adams

Also the New York at Dawn series are very interesting and me being a trained Architect as Raymond also is ...well I was so drawn to them. Coincidentaly Raymond is having a solo show of his series opening@ Greenwich House, March 9, 2011. which, I am planning to attent .

Portfolio Reviews 2/23/11 @ The American Society of Media Photographers NY

It went really well and I had a line down the block of people to see me which was very flattering.
I saw some interesting work and it is always great to encourage and provide guidance.
Two Bridges by  Robert Anthony deRosa

This photograph (above) by Robert Anthony deRosa titled Two Bridges was one of my favorites. A very quintessential NY image. I like it because even though NYC had been photographed through history from every angle ever imagined, this photo is innovative and it provides the kind of urban beauty of what NYC is famously known for.
